About this listen

If you don't know Simon Scarrow, you don't know Rome!

The Blood Crows is the enthralling twelfth novel in Simon Scarrow's best-selling Eagles of the Empire series. A must-read for fans of Bernard Cornwell.

Britannia, AD 51. For nearly a decade, the Roman Empire has fought to assert its hold over Britannia. But relentless opposition from native tribes led by the fanatical King Caratacus threatens to destroy everything. Prefect Cato and Centurion Macro are dispatched from Rome to aid the campaign. Placed in command of an outpost in the remote western mountains, they face a challenge even more deadly than the unremitting attacks of barbarian forces.

For they must wrench control of the fort from Centurion Quertus, a man who wages a savage personal war and inspires a loyalty in his men above their bond with Rome. With dangerous enemies on both sides, Cato and Macro face the fight of their lives to bring peace to the most perilous frontier in Europe.

What made the experience of listening to The Blood Crows the most enjoyable?

It is the edge of the seat drama that Mr Scarrow does very well with these characters, seamlessly inserting them into historical events like Sharpe and Harper

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

It is typical of this type of drama, no author kills off their central characters, despite the peril that they are placed in

What does Jonathan Keeble bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He is excellent at adding the requisite atmosphere to the novel, I certainly would recommend this production because of this. I look forward to future recordings of his.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It was but unfortunately work kept getting in the way

Any additional comments?

I'm a huge fan of this author and am looking to his next publication

Macro & Cato are in trouble again

The last book was ruined by the poor performances so it’s good to hear Jon back telling the tall tails of Macro and Kato. On to the next book really enjoying this series. Hope we keep Jonathan for the rest of the books .

Great performance

Always thoroughly enjoy these stories and even better when they are read by Jonathan Keeble who started me off on the series. It's frustrating when other narrators are brought in as the characters just don't 'feel right'. Macro started out with a gruff southern accent and that needs to follow on through the series - it's off putting when he develops a northern or midlands accent. Still not bad for a Roman :-)

Another great adventures with Cato and Macro

Another really gripping storey and I can't wait to find out what happens in the next installment.

Another epic adventure by Cato & Macro

A very interesting story in the series that's for sure. I only wish that this one was longer, seeing our 2 protagonists deal with Quaetus over a longer period of time would have been very interesting.

And once again a smashing performance by Mr. Keeble, certainly my favourite reader for these stories.

Brilliant, a vivid and evocative read.
