Summary

Based on real historical events.

A time for vengeance. German frontier: Close to the Rhine, a Roman centurion, Lucius Tullus, prepares to take his soldiers on patrol. On the opposite side of the river, German tribes are resentful of the harsh taxes about to be imposed upon them. Suspicious that there might be unrest, Tullus knows that his men's survival will be determined not just by their training and discipline, but by his leadership.

A time for war. What neither Tullus nor his commander, Governor Varus, realise is that ranged against them is the charismatic chieftain and trusted ally of Rome, Arminius, who has long been plotting to drive the Romans from the tribal lands east of the Rhine.

A time to die. As Varus' legions prepare to leave their summer encampment, thousands of warriors - directed by Arminius - are massing nearby. Eager to throw off the Roman yoke, the tribesmen prepare a deadly ambush. Only the gods can save the Romans now....

Great Read

What did you like most about Eagles at War?

The fact that the events are accurate and Ben has tried to be as historically true to the events make this book stand out.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Eagles at War?

Going back in the night to find the Women, Child and Pup.

What does David Rintoul bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Pronunciation of Roman names and Places :)

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Even though I knew the ending it kept be listening to find out how and the detail added in that is then explained in the authors note is quite fascinating.

Any additional comments?

Another superb Ben Kane, full of realism

Would you listen to Eagles at War again? Why?

The realism that Ben manages to get into his stories, while still maintaining the drive necessary to propel the reader/listener keeps me wanting more

What did you like best about this story?

The realism, the historic accuracy, the believable characters

What about David Rintoul’s performance did you like?

Clear diction makes the recording easy to understand, even when listening in the car.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, if only I had a car journey long enough.

Any additional comments?

A little more inflection required in the humerous parts, and some variation in delivery of dialogue needed to take it from 4 to 5 stars

Ben Kane Does It Again! 5 Stars

Would you consider the audio edition of Eagles at War to be better than the print version?

I really enjoyed the Audible Version and unfortunately have not read the printed version.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I found it very difficult to choose a favourite character as this book was so well written that the book brought the reader close to a number of characters. It was quiet hard to choose a side as both(Roman and Germanic) had traits of good and evil. Both Tulis and Arminius were a close top spot.

Which character – as performed by David Rintoul – was your favourite?

Tulis

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Hells Forest

Excellent Roman historical fiction

Characters well developed. Story moves along well. Follows historical events well. This book had everything I need in a period story. Use of discovered artifacts in the storyline is a very nice touch. I bought the next book. For me, thats good praise.

I have dumped more than one series in mid-book because of ridiculous characters, repetitive tropes, complete changes of history and historical errors.

Well done.

Truly the best narrated and written historical novel I’ve read yet, and that’s out of many. Hats off to Ben Kane and David Rintoul.

Wonderful book, good read.

Wonderful book, at times the writing was so real that I could imagine myself there amongst the fighting. I could smell the blood and sweat of the soldiers see their exhausted forms in the mist.

Amazing!

The book is amazing! The story is amazing, the narration is way too musical for my taste.
The sound effects are a bit too much for a grown up book. I don’t want to hear how the horse whinnies and how the trumpet sounds. What’s next? How the cow goes moo and the sheep goes baaahh!?

This is as close to this kind of war as I would ever wish

Well written, well read, and setting the sides as both brave and heroic from each cultures point of view. You can’t bring civilization to barbarians without force and you can’t stay free if aren’t willing to use force. The results of this conflict are still evident today. Who really won the best outcome for their future - who can tell?

Superb!

One of the best decisions made for this audible version of Ben Kane's Eagles at War was to choose David Rintoul as narrator. Mr. Rintoul could make a nursery rhyme sound exciting. He's an absolute master of narration of this gritty novel. If you are a fan of Mr. Rintoul's narration then I highly recommend the horror stories he had narrated.

I am thoroughly enjoying the Eagles series by Mr. Kane and am on the second novel currently.

Excellent and fun military-historical fiction

This is my 3rd Ben Kane book, and perhaps my favorite though they are all excellent. Kane's stories are very much rooted in big historical events, with the battle of Tuetoberg (sp?) Forest told here. An epic event brought to us through the eyes of a fictional character as he interacts with the real historical events and people. Can't wait to start #2 in this series.

Fast Paced Action!

Entertaining story with fast paced story line. If you are a lover of Roman military history this is a must read.

Enjoyed the multiple prospective's of characters on each side of the events and on different levels from the commander of the army to ordinary foot soldiers.

Looking forward to more from Ben Kane!

Fantastic

The eagle series are great books. I’d recommend them to anyone. I’ve read/listened to them all multiple times. I never get tired of them. I would like to thank Mr. Kane himself for getting this particular book added to audible. It was the first one of the series and only one I was unable to purchase. He corrected the issue. Thanks to him for his assistance and for such a good read.
