Summary

An historical romance set in London and the English countryside with remarkable nuance and descriptions about dress, parties, houses, men and women and their dealings with each other, with special insights into marriage. A wonderful ode to our better selves and what we can be if we move beyond the bumps and bruises in life.

Story murdered by the narrator!

Love this GH story but it’s ruined by the narrator...don’t buy this .. hopefully it will be withdrawn for a better version. If I could return it I would ...

Dire

Absolutely dreadful . Like other reviewers I could only listen to this for a few minutes. I am cross that I used an Audible credit on this, why on earth did they think this narrator was suitable?

Utterly terrible

A lovely story ruined by the reader and the appalling, irritating warble in the background. I am going to try and make an official complaint to Audible. It was unbelievably awful.

Beware!

Listen to a sample before you buy. The narration on this is really poor - with music in the background.

Oh dear!

I couldn't listen to more than five minutes of this book, sadly. The narrator sounds like he is in a large room and hasn't a suitable voice for character reading effectively.
That coupled with the repetitive music in the background which after a few minutes was still highly distracting. I skipped to chapter 20 and the music was still there.
Hence I haven't any idea whether the story was good because I gave up.

Black moth

A good story ruined by background monotonous music and poor narration.. Pauses in the wrong places and lack of fluency. Don't know whether I'll be able to listen to end.

Really bad

Sorry but this is really bad. I only managed 5 minutes and I had to switch it off. The narration is robotic and jumpy and there is annoying music in the background. I'm really surprised it was released like this. I want to return it but haven't found how yet.

Atrocious

I only listened to the first couple of minutes
A total waste of money
Deaver Brown cannot tell a story to save his life, he stutters, stammers & pronounces incorrectly
His accent is totally wrong for regency England
He just reads the book with no attempt to act out the different characters
The twinkling tune in the background totally destroys any concentration on the story
Never again, I have all the Georgette Heyer books in audible & paper back
This recording is an insult

Interesting narrator!

The narrator is obviously not very good, being American he has some problems with English pronunciation especially some of the archaic words. The plinky music behind the narration is not helpful.

I do feel that the narrator actually likes the book and that's why he did it.

I've just realised that I already had the audio narrated by Julian Rhind-Tutt, and now there is another version in production!

good book

This is a wonderful book and was very reasonably priced on audible. However, the narration took some getting used to. It was more done as if an amateur read it instead of the professional narration I am used to. There was coughing and pauses and trouble with pronounciation but truly after I got into the book, that barely bothered me. The book was full of twists and turns and I found it very entertaining. Great story!

terrible narrator!

Background music runs entire time. The narrative sounds it was recorded in a basement! yep
