Summary
In a world full of magic and mystery, eighteen-year-old Maia is the exiled princess of Comoros and rightful heir to the throne. Forced to live as a servant in her enemy’s home, Maia flees her captors and begins a perilous quest to save her people. To survive, she must use magic she has learned in secret - despite the fact that women are forbidden to control it. Hunted by enemies at every turn, Maia realizes that danger lurks within her, too. Her powers threaten to steal not only her consciousness but also her sense of right and wrong. Can she set herself free and save the realm she loves - even if her people have forgotten her? In bestselling author Jeff Wheeler’s fantasy epic, the answer may be only the beginning to Maia’s journey throughout the mystical land of Muirwood.

Great story which will keep you listening
I really enjoyed this book. I struggled initially with the narrator's tone which I felt sounded quite robotic but once I got used to it it was fine. The story is very engaging and I frequently found myself at home after a car journey sitting outside to listen for just a little longer before switching off.

By Cheshu!
This book is written in parts skipping from past to present and back again. I am not sure I particularly liked this way, but I listened on.
Maia, 18 year old daughter of the King of Comoros, banished, named bastard and disinherited in order that her father's mistress and her children can inherit what is rightfully hers. Her Mother, also banished to the Abbey of Muirwood is kept away from her daughter until she agrees to divorce her husband in order that he can marry his mistress.
Maia then begins her quest to reach the Kingdom of Naess, where she hopes to study to become a Maston. However, somewhere along the way an evil spirit enters her body
This is a book of promise but is, in my opinion, let down somewhat by Maia, who gives new meaning to the word victim. Also, whether the Mastons are any better than the Dochte Mandar has yet to be revealed, but I have my doubts from this first chapter in the trilogy.

I love the Muirwood series
Any additional comments?
I am so very grateful Jeff Wheeler continued this world. I loved the first series, and when it ended, I felt like Lia's story was unfinished, now that I am finally getting closure on her life and learning about her Great, Great Grand-Daughter Mya I couldn't be happier. Thank you so much, it will be interesting to see what Mya's life will turn into now and how she will deal with her struggles to come. Thank you!!!

I Wouldn't Recommend It
What disappointed you about The Banished of Muirwood?
It had so much potential -- the concept behind it was awesome. But I found the main character absolutely unbearable. For somebody who prided herself on not crying, she certainly whined and cried a lot throughout the book. And I also just couldn't believe the part of the plot where the king was so ridiculously calloused toward his daughter and queen. It made even less sense that the daughter felt such a strong need to be loyal to him when he was such a jerk to her and such a terrible ruler. I expected the main character to do something more.
What could Jeff Wheeler have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Modify the main character. She's very whiny and overcome with emotion in every single scene. I couldn't stand her. The concept behind the plot was awesome. I just wish the plot were different, or more believable.
How could the performance have been better?
The voice of the main character made her seem hysterical when she said almost anything. When she was happy, she was consumed with emotion and her voice shook. When she was sad, she was consumed with emotion and her voice shook. When she was having even the most mundane conversation, it sounded like she was consumed with emotion and her voice shook. It made it sound very melodramatic.
What character would you cut from The Banished of Muirwood?
The main character. Her place as the main character was fine, but her personality was very unlikable.
Any additional comments?
I'm not trying to knock the book. Some people will really enjoy this. Authors can't make everyone happy. But if you like series like The Wheel of Time, A Song of Ice & Fire, The Reckoners, Mistborn, Stormlight Archive, The Lightbringer Series, etc., this one probably isn't going to do it for you.

Excellent - read Legends of Muirwood first.
I was blessed in reading Legends of Muirwood series earlier this year and found it stuck with me long after completing it. I was greatful to discover this first book in September of 2015 and furthermore delighted that all three books would release by the end of October 2015. Frankly, I wish more writers and publishers would take this approach.
As I said in the title of this review, I think it is truly necessary to read the first series set in this world called the Legends of Muirwood. It greatly enhances this new series and this first book. Why? Because you as the reader will know how and why Princess Mya is being taught wrong doctrine. This first book may be difficult for the more sensitive souls out there because of the amount of suffering that Mya endures. My heart ached for the choices that she made both on her journey and how lonely she was as a child. But if you hang in there through this first book despite all the terrible things that happen to Mya, she does find peace later in the series.
This is a fast paced book and although I did not always appreciate the back and forth between her young life and the present journey, it is necessary for character development and the plot.
Also, this book and every other book of Jeff Wheeler's is clean of foul language and inappropriate PDA moments. I find that personally as a Christian there is a great deal of allegory in the story and important lessons. Specifically, when we fail to know the difference between right and wrong actions within the framework of our beliefs how quickly we can be deceived. There are principles to be gained from this book if you choose to see beyond the surface. thank you to Jeff Wheeler for an excellent reading experience and I cannot wait for the last book.

Excellent story line with lots of surprises.
I really do not like stories with possession of the spirit, yet this story has merit. We all deal with the good and evil within us. This story thankfully displayed both with the good side having strength. And the heroine/ villain did not get to keep her infatuation interest. Thank you for a good novel.

A darker series
This book was quite a bit darker than the previous trilogy. Maia is a princess with a very rough life. Her inheritance and birth right are stripped from her and she is pursued by the myriad ones and rather evil Dochte Mandar. It starts in a rather different fashion with her traveling with a kishion and using a kystrel. She meets a few well-developed characters along the way including a hunter, and the king of Dahomey. There is some medium use in this novel, but its much more subdued than the previous series. In short, it seems the world is headed down an evil path again and Maia but try to fight against that and save the kingdoms. The writing (and narration) were pretty top notch although there were a few slow parts that keep me from giving it a five.

Teenage angst defeated the magic
The palace intrigue was interesting or could have been if it wasn't always muffled by the Cinderella whining of the main character. The larger ideas of espionage and double dealing are continually undercut with the mental machinations of Maia. The occasional flashback or false memory would have been better structurally instead of the constant back and forth.
