French male model Simeon Duchamp has a lot of explaining to do.

Two years after a breakdown Simeon is off drugs and booze and wants to stay that way. On his road to reclaiming his life and modeling career, Sim first needs to apologize to the man he hurt the most -his ex-best friend and object of his unrequited affection Pieter Bayer. Pieter now has a long-term partner, artist Emily Raven, with whom he shares a baby son. Sim is amazed when Pieter accepts his apology, and invites him into his family.

Closeness to Pieter sees Simeon's longing for his friend is rekindled. But then, when Simeon meets an attractive older man, Bastian Roth at an Art Exhibition, he realizes that there is a soul more broken than his, and Simeon feels compelled to help. Simeon's connection with the troubled Bastian Roth turns his world upside down. He has to decide whether to allow himself to fall for the man who wants him or pine for the man he can never have.

Gary Furlong is the star of this read!!!

I listened to the audiobook and Gary Furlong deserves all 5 stars for such an amazing performance. He is a dream narrator, and I'm happy to listen to him anytime..

Sweet thing was a journey through, addiction, unrequited love, new love, lies and secrets, but above all else how true friendship and real love is all that matters, it is the support network we all need in life.

This was my first from this author and I will give some of her others a try, as much as I enjoyed listening, I didn't really connect much with this one, but it certainly hasn't put me off her other books.

Mileage may vary

I think it's a testament to Starling's ability to write and Furlong's performance that saw me finish this.

When the two MC's of a romance are unlikeable, it makes for a difficult read. Of course, some readers love petulant bratty boys and older overbearing dominant types, but I find them respectively annoying and creepy. If they are the types of characters you like (along with unhealthy relationships) then I can highly recommend this story.

This book was perfect

I love Isabel Starling's writing! But this book ..this book tops them all - heart wrenching yet beautiful storyline, wonderful writing, perfect narration.

There was heartache and joy, but above all there was passion and hope. The story of Sim and Bast was perfect. We were not spared their grief-stricken pasts nor their tears, but we were also swept along as they finally found a once in a lifetime love.

Enjoyable

Although this isn’t the best Isabella Starling book that I have read it is still a fantastic book. The characters were interesting and well developed and it was an interesting journey seeing how the main characters were growing in order to gain a functioning and satisfactory relationship

Heartbreak and Love

Two broken characters finding themselves and each other.

Another fantastic story by Isobel Starling, with complex characters, and an eventful plot. Despite Sim's flaws, it's easy to love him, and I was shouting at him at times to do the right thing. I'm hopeful for a sequel!

The narration was perfect, with Gary creating mesmerising accents (he can talk French to me any day of the week).

This romance is a Sweet Thing

First book by this author and I love it. Found out this is book 2 and I'm gonna need to read the first one. I enjoyed every moment of this story. From slutty manwhore to a sweet thing. From heartbroken with grief and loss to a sweet thing. Oh the feels. At first Simeon didn't seem to have any redeeming qualities, but after getting to know him you have to admire his strength. Bastian and Simeon's first encounter was the worst and I couldn't see how they would move on. They worked it out slowly though and the relationship blossom into something beautiful. Gary Furlong narration was beyond perfect. He changes accents and character voices seamlessly. I'm in awe of his performance . I was given this audiobook by the Author in exchange for an honest review.

as good as the ebook

The story is always 4 or 5 stars, because if I wouldn't like the story as ebook, I wouldn't listen to the audiobook.

The performance from the narrator is also very important for me. I can't listen to a lot, because my English as a non-native-speaker isn't so perfect to follow a whole story over hours, when the narrator speaks too fast or too sloppy. Normally I have to SEE the person, who is talking to me in English. It took me a little bit, to come into the narrator, but at the end, it worked. I only have to take a few breaks between. I'm just not yet finish with the book, but I listen enough to give a review.

PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings:

5* - very very good
it's like an A+

4* - very good and will be often re-listening
it's like an A

3* - it's more then a one-time-listening, but not more then twice a year.
it's like a B

Absolutely stunning

I love redeeming characters and Sim is definitely redeemable. After leaving the clinic he sets out to make amends for all his wrong doings and along the way he meets the man who will complete his life. True love doesn't run smooth for Sim though and there are a few bumps in his road of recovery. It's such a beautiful story. The narrator is absolutely perfect. If you love English/French accents then omg you'll love this story. It's one of those books you don't forget.

Excellent

To be honest I wasn’t sure what to expect from this story and I was not sure what it was about but as I had listened to the Shatterproof Bond set I knew I couldn’t go wrong.
I loved this super story about Simeon and Bastian. The relationship starts out badly with both having issues and you want to be involved and right there with them as they work out their problems and miscommunications. Can’t give too much away so take a chance and listen to this.. I adored the accents Gary gave to all of the characters, superb choice of Narrator..

Emotional slow burn romance

This is the first book I have read that is set in a different country to America or the UK, that isn’t just mc’s visiting. I loved that I didn’t know the area and wow do I now want to go travelling!!!

Bastian and sim are two broken men who find that love can work when you get to know each other and work at the relationship. I loved this story, it had me laughing, crying and shouting no no don’t do it a few times!! Word of warning don’t listen in the car because you get weird looks when you get to your destination and can’t leave the car because you are so engrossed in the story!!!! I liked both mc’s equally and was cheering for them both, this is a slow burn story where they get to know each other and build trust before they get intimate. There were few sex scenes which were relevant to the story and flowed through the story line.

Although I found Gary’s narration hard to get used to for the first 10 minutes, I think it was because of the heavy accent, but I quickly got used to it and feel it would have been strange without it and the story would not have been so deep had he not used the accents. I loved the voices he used for each character.

Really enjoyable story that I will be listening to again and again. Will also be checking out other books by the author and narrator.

In love

Getting to know Simeon has been wonderful. He's a man who is trying to find himself in a sober world. He's messed up and now is trying to make amends and find out who and what he deserves. And he finds it in another who has been struck by tragedy and finding it hard to move on. Watching Simeon and Bastian navigate something they've never done before has been a joy. Both men deserve to be happy. I couldn't get enough of these two.

Great narration really adds to the story.

The narration: If you haven't listened to this narrator yet, you definitely should. He performs so many accents in a way that seems flawless to me. I am always impressed by his variation and his ability to emote. Listening to a book narrated by him only enhances the enjoyment of the story.

The story:  Sweet Thing is book 2 of a series and can definitely be read as a standalone. The first book is an m/f book, some of Simeon's backstory seems to take place in it. The author catches us up enough that it doesn't have to be read first, but I did find myself adding it to my to-read list.

Simeon is kind of a broken character. He is on the mend after rehab and counseling for drug and alcohol addictions. His addictive personality disorder isn't something that will go away so it's a constant struggle to stay away from his former vices. And not to form new ones. He finds himself having to apologize to his very best friend Pieter, who he hurt in book one. There is such a history that is glossed over in this book, but you can feel their bond. Hence my wanting to read book one. Through Pieter and his wife, Simeon meets Bastien.

Bastien is broken also. Pieter and Emily encourage the relationship between Simeon and Bastien, thinking that two broken men can help each other. It's debatable if that is a good idea, but their intentions are good. Bastien's problems are with intimacy and while Simeon is able to help, Bastien is also dealing with loss and a lack of closure from his last relationship. He cares for Simeon, no doubt, but he has a lot of issues that don't allow him to put Simeon first, and things between them hit some rough spots.

There is some angst in this book, but it's not overly emotional. I felt disappointed at times in both characters. Which means they aren't too perfect to be real. It's a love story between broken and flawed men. I enjoyed the story and really liked Pieter and Emily's place in the book. I'd say they are the most prominent secondary characters and they add to the story. Overall, I would definitely recommend the book, especially the audio version.

Oh the feels

Sweet thing is not your typical sweet and fluffy romance. My emotions were all over the place listening to this book. Simeon is recovering from drug and alcohol abuse. His past is a mess, so much that he ruined his relationship with his best friend Pieter. Luckily when Simeon gets out of rehab Pieter forgives him, and they work on rebuilding there friendship.
Bastien has a sad past. He had a homophonic father and his partner died in an accident. Simeone and Bastien first encounter was terrible. I kept thinking how are they going to get past this?? They work things out and a relationship blooms. Sweet thing is about second chances. It’s incredible emotional. It’s sad, sweet and hot. There were some twist and turns I wasn’t expecting. I couldn’t stop listening. The narrator did a really good job. I definitely recommend this book 😍😍

excellent!

First book I've listened to by this author and I am very impressed. The story telling pulled me right in and kept my interest until the end. The characters were well fleshed out, the chemistry and intimate scenes were sexy, and I loved all the supporting cast. The narrator Gary Furlong was perfect for this book and I will look for more books performed by him. This author is now on my must read and I will look for her other publications.

Not for me

I love this author and this narrator, but this book is not a favorite. I prefer books more plot oriented than so strictly character oriented. the book is well written, but it is not one that I enjoyed or will ever listen to again.

What an awesome book/narrator

Let me just state the fact that I normally don’t leave reviews unless I’m totally blown away by the book. This was a beautifully written and equally if not better narration. This author is my new favorite. She can write like no other author. And this book would never have been as awesome had there been any one other than Gary furlong. He’s an incredible linguist and purrs when reading French. I this this book should get an award 🥇 for the duo Starling/Furlong. You have to get this book. I can’t rave enough. So worth 20 credits Great job guys best book of the year in my opinion. !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm taken 🖤

I read the first two books in this series via ebook because that's the only format available for them, however, I bought this one on audio first and definitely enjoyed be able to journey with this narrator. What a sweeping journey of many things, pain, loss, love, fresh starts, and heart. I enjoy any story that takes place abroad and this was no exception in that, but I felt so far away from knowing what was going to happen, although I wound up sound.

The characters are all damaged and finding their way. Their challenges are not so easily overcome and I truly enjoyed this series. This book in particular via audio allowing me to indulge longer periods of time.

Plan to see what else the author has in audiobooks.

Realistic

Well written and the characters are realistic and deep.
The narrator is very good.
No evil crazy character just the mind set of the characters who are struggling to find them self after hard life experiences.
I had great time listening. I hope you enjoy it too.

Beautiful story

First of all, Gary Furlong gives a great performance. I loved all the voices.

Isobel is fast becoming one of my favorite writer's in this genre. This story was written so beautifully with an almost heartbreaking journey from rock bottom to love and happiness. I enjoyed every minute of this audiobook.

so worth the credit.
