It was an age of empire, an age of contrast, and an age of dramatic change - and one which would determine the destinies of nations as well as of men. Captain Philip Blackwood of the Royal Marines rejoins his ship, HMS Audacious, in August of 1850, anxious to get back into action. "Per Mare - Per Terram" is the marines' motto. In the torturous heat of Africa, where they are sent to stamp out the remaining strongholds of slavery, and later, in the bitter war of the Crimea, Philip Blackwood and his men learn to obey it without question.

Western Ocean, 1942... From the bridge of HMS Gladiator, Lieutenant-Commander David Howard’s orders were chillingly clear. There could be no mercy. To the men who fought to protect the vital, threatened Merchant Navy convoys in the Western Approaches, the Battle of the Atlantic was a full-scale war. A relentless, savage war against an ever-present enemy and a violent sea - in an arena known only to its embittered survivors as the killing ground. HMS Gladiator was part of that war.

Malta 1941. To most people H.M.S. It seems that captain and ship are both past their best. But as the war enters a new phase Chesnaye senses the possibility of a fresh, significant role - for him and the Saracen.

As good as all those years ago
I suspect I am like many on Audible who will be drawn to this title. I read, these books as a youngster, loved them and fancied reliving the adventures. But was it as good? I think the very simple answer is yes! Kent of course displays sound knowledge of naval history and delivers exciting yarns which Michael Jayston does a thoroughly good job of narrating. Maybe some of the newer authors of naval historical fiction have developed the genre further but from my listen to Stand Into Danger it can still hold its head up high!
I notice sadly that the previous two books are not available and that there are gaps later in the series on Audible's roster. I'd say don't let that put you off, there's still a great deal of enjoyment to be had here and enough of the backstory is clear enough to mean that isn't a concern.

I remember reading Midshipman Bilitho when I was much younger, this moves the character along as he experiences the trials of being a lieutenant and his first brush with the fairer sex. It is a shame that the next book in the series is no available through audible.

Stand into danger
As with all Alexander Kent stories the detail is excellent, but never so excessive that they bog down the story. The characters are realistic and believable, combining everyday life aboard the ships with exciting actions and smaller human sub plots, that bring the 19th century navy into the reader/listener's imagination

Listening to this great book again
Years ago I found these great Alexander Kent books in my local library on cassette tape, then later CD (what a pain they used to be, you had to keep a note of where you where in the track list) Jaston’s narration is superb, the authors detail so well woven in to the story, Kent stands proud as the flagship of the line off battle tall ship era. Any one book stands well on its own, but as a collection in chronological order sweep you through an interesting time in colonial history world wide. If you need to find a new old author to get lost away from the Goodish modern world... you have found him.

The excellent narration of this tale immediately draws one back through time as Richard Bolitho joins his first ship as a Third Lieutenant aboard HMS Destiny. A Patrick O'Brian Rival?
As a great Patrick O'Brian fan I am excited to find the offerings of Alexander Kent on Audible. This is a good yarn from a talented writer who obviously knows this genre, that of the late 18th and early 19th centuries English naval service. Since this is the first of these books I've read, I look forward to listening to more of Kent's work. One slight problem I see is that there are 30 Richard Bolitho novels in this collection and only nine are presently available from Audible. Also, Audible said a couple of months ago it was going to number selections in series so they would be easier to read in order. This has not been done yet, so it's necessary to find the correct order elsewhere. It's also unknown whether more of the Kent-Bolitho saga is to be recorded and sold through Audible. I'd prefer to plow through a series such as this without having to go back and read new additions out of sequnce later. So the big question is what is happening with the other 21 novels in this series from Audible???

The New Master of Naval Fiction
Alexander Kent's Bolitho saga carries on the legacy of other fine authors such as C.S. Forester. As a former Royal Naval officer, Kent brings a keen understanding of life aboard ship and the challenges of command. Stand Into Danger is the story of a young officer (Richard Bolitho) who has to learn, first hand, about those challenges and the dangers that accompany them.

What did you like best about Stand into Danger? What did you like least?
Very good characters. The book moved too slow then it all seemed to wrap up at once.
Was Stand into Danger worth the listening time?
Yes, the narration and story line was worth the time. I wouldn't miss my wedding to hear the ending but i could see myself being late to work.
Any additional comments?
Don't buy this book if your looking for something to fill the O brien void in your life. But for what its worth, it has some value.

Seeking missing treasure
I love a good sea story. This story takes place in 1749 and is between wars so the British Navy is reducing ships and personnel. Lt Richard Bolitho is happy he got as assignment as the number 3 lieutenant on a 24 gun frigate. The ship is sent out on a special assignment to find some missing treasure taken by the British from a Spanish ship then stole from the British. There is lots of action with battles both on land and sea. Bolitho is still learning his trade and learning how to be a leader. Michael Jayston did an excellent job narrating the book. This is the 3rd book in the series. If you like good old fashion sailing ship stories you will enjoy this one.

Kent has a great story to tell...
I love the story line and Bolitho and his shipmates are great characters, but Alexander Kent needs to learn to express himself better. Run a tally for every time a character simply "said" or "asked". No adjectives or alternatives like exclaimed or pondered. Nope. Just said or asked. The count is way too high.

A young man, in the flower of his manhood.
Bolitho tests his metal, as steel sharpes steel, against and with Captain and crew, aboard DESTINY. Complicated by a woman of rare beauty. Will he be ruined or all together wrecked? Enjoyed the story IMMENSELY !!! My only complaint. The ending. Did the Captain Dumaresq, get his man, Sir Piers Garrick, or had Garrick slipped through his fingers?

Worst naval officer ever
I can't believe this has such high reviews. How can you possibly like it? Bolitho is the worst officer ever. Mostly he just stands around and watches things go by--he's not the dashing leader you'd hope a young officer to be. He's derelict in his duties, sneaky and not the loyal officer his captain asked him to be. The plot is ludicrous. Why would this ravishing beauty fall for a 17-year-old? Why would she risk everything for a boy she's hardly spoken with? How can they have a romantic rendenzvous on the quarterdeck of a frigate? And speaking of frigates. . .has Kent ever been to sea? Has he ever been aboard a sailing ship? I'll stop ranting. This book is pathetic. I was hoping for something like Patrick O'Brien's series, bu this is not it.

A Great Sea Tale
I was concerned that the stories of Mr. Kent and Bolitho would not measure up to the recently finished series by Patrick O'Brien with the sea tales of Captain Aubrey and Dr. Maturin... but I was mistaken. I think Mr. Kent has fashioned a series as equally exciting. I look forward to completing them all as well. I highly recommend both.
