About this listen

March 1814. Admiral Sir Richard Bolitho returns to England from several months' rigorous patrolling off the North American coast. War with the United States has not yet ended, but news of Napoleon's defeat and abdication has stunned a navy and a nation bled by years of European conflict.

Victory has been the impossible dream, and now, for Bolitho, a vision of the future and a personal peace seems attainable. However, an unsympathetic Admiralty dispatches him to Malta.

Is this appointment a compliment or a malicious ploy to keep Bolitho from the woman he loves and the freedom he craves? He cannot know, but the voice of duty speaks more insistently even than the voice of the heart, and in this familiar sea where both glory and tragedy have touched his life, Bolitho must confront the future, the renaissance of a hated tyrant and the fulfilment of destiny.

Alexander Kent is the author of 28 acclaimed books featuring Richard Bolitho. Under his own name, Douglas Reeman, and in the course of a career spanning 45 years, he has written over 30 novels and two nonfiction books.

this book a coupla days ago and am not pleased how it finished,so sad,a great man has passed but it couldn't have been more fitting or more perfect,I'd like to see a new series about Adam and Catherine,,oh,I've just found "second to none" 🙂

This book is the last in the series. I feel it was not the best because it rambled and meandered. Very little action but what was there was reasonably exciting. A good description of the politics of the day. The fact that there was no war in the story was disappointing, and it suggests the author struggled with the storyline. I gave it five stars out of respect for those books that had gone before.

Such a sad ending

This series has given me hours of enjoyment, despite what I can only imagine are the authors sexual fantasies, the navy attitudes are portrayed very well , particularly the public attitudes towards the offices and not the deceased or crippled me n The only answer is that if ever we get into another war is to put the politicians on the front line on day one, and.see how long it lasts.

Have read several of Bolitho books and I got several chapters into this book but had to give up. It was like a story from 'Women's Own' or some such magazine. The early books were stories of sea battles and adventures but this book I found boring beyond belief. To much tittle tattle about female relationships. Maybe it would have improved but I have other books to listen to. Baz
