Summary
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother's coffin as the world watched in sorrow-and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling-and how their lives would play out from that point on.
For Harry, this is that story at last.
Before losing his mother, twelve-year-old Prince Harry was known as the carefree one, the happy-go-lucky Spare to the more serious Heir. Grief changed everything. He struggled at school, struggled with anger, with loneliness-and, because he blamed the press for his mother's death, he struggled to accept life in the spotlight.
At twenty-one, he joined the British Army. The discipline gave him structure, and two combat tours made him a hero at home. But he soon felt more lost than ever, suffering from post-traumatic stress and prone to crippling panic attacks. Above all, he couldn't find true love.
Then he met Meghan. The world was swept away by the couple's cinematic romance and rejoiced in their fairy-tale wedding. But from the beginning, Harry and Meghan were preyed upon by the press, subjected to waves of abuse, racism, and lies. Watching his wife suffer, their safety and mental health at risk, Harry saw no other way to prevent the tragedy of history repeating itself but to flee his mother country. Over the centuries, leaving the Royal Family was an act few had dared. The last to try, in fact, had been his mother...
For the first time, Prince Harry tells his own story, chronicling his journey with raw, unflinching honesty. A landmark publication, Spare is full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.

Honest and relatable insight into Harry's life.
From the first word, it was honest, raw and relatable. The hurt Harry feels is palpable, the excitement he felt having fallen in love was deeply touching, and to have her not accepted after everything cut deep as a betrayal. A much needed correction of the tabloid narrative that tried to ruin him, but that he has had the strength to stand up to. Congrats Harry, may you continue to find peace.

Very insightful and heartwarming
Honest, open and well narrated; very descriptive which at times I found difficult yet so very heartwarming in places, it's well worth listening to the end. Prince Harry's own personal experience of love and loss, his own suffering and that of others, his relationships with significant people and in particular the dangerous, judgemental failings and misrepresentations of the media in relation to the system of the monarchy his family is trapped in, all of which he expresses extremely well albeit from his own wounded perspective. The truth as he sees it, not the truth in its entirety; whilst he understands his family are trapped in the system he's taken an angry stance by publicly judging and blaming key family members, evidence of his own inner turmoil.
An excellent insight into the mind of a man born a spare to the heir of the throne and to all that entails in relation to the family vs the system; he has indeed got his point across, so well done Harry!

Excellent and moving
Interesting memoir, well told. I found this a very moving account and I am glad Harry has had the chance to put forward his side of the story.

Nice to hear his side
My wife and I listened to Harry speak about being the spare pretty much all day today. The paps and uk press came across as awful and we couldn’t help but agree with his anger towards them. Get the audiobook rather than the book is our recommendation!

A thoughtful and honest account
I think this is a wonderful book. It above all comes across as honest. He hides nothing and tells his story with a gentle and calm manner. Distinctly different than his family, the story is being told in his own words with insight and deep reflection of his actions and the actions of other members of his family.
A very good read/listen

Very well read
I was sick of reading the horrible headlines about this book, so I decided to listen & make my own opinion. Firstly, Harry narrates very well - I was concerned his voice might be too 'posh', but it's not. Some of the writing is very touching, some is over fussily described. I don't like the salacious stuff, or the barbs at his family. However, 8 enjoyed the insight - I'm glad I bought it.

I feel sad for him
It’s beautiful how he’s articulating his emotions and his thoughts. I absolutely love it. Meghan came into his life the perfect time.

Awesome book, Harry really is the only good one.
It's good to hear an insiders story on the royals, I always did kinda like Harry and thought he was a good guy. There's lots of triggered royals out there, it's a shame they care more about this than they do about "he who does not sweat".
