Summary

You, too, can become a successful writer - if you’re willing to develop this trait.

Do you know that it’s almost impossible to find a successful writer who has published only one book? Virtually every widely acclaimed author has an extensive catalog of books. To join the elite ranks of those who write consistently, you need to learn how to stay prolific over the long term. And for that, the number one ingredient is self-discipline.

In Self-Discipline for Writers, best-selling author Martin Meadows shares his philosophy and strategies on how to build self-discipline as a writer and how to keep writing over the long term. Here are some of the most important ideas you’ll discover:

  • Three foundations of self-discipline for writers (avoid a common mistake that almost always leads to failure)
  • Three steps to a strong work ethic as a writer (learn how to develop a strategy for consistently hitting your word counts)
  • Five types of self-doubt common among writers and how to overcome them (If you don’t believe in yourself as a writer, how are your readers supposed to believe in you?)
  • Seven tips on how to manage your energy as a writer - including not only the most fundamental advice, but also intricacies like discussing your projects with other people, capturing fleeting ideas, and reading your reviews (learn why optimizing your energy is key to consistent results)
  • Why control is essential for any writer (and how to claim it)
  • Five good business practices for more self-discipline (this includes some surprising thoughts on how to run your writing business to reduce frustration and increase productivity).

Writing doesn’t have to be burdensome. You, too, can write with more ease, and most importantly, write and publish consistently, so that you can enjoy a flourishing writing career. Let’s learn together how to accomplish this exciting goal.

Solid Gold*****

Martin Meadows hits another home run! (Likely a pen name, more on that further into the review)

This is the seventh title I've read from the Godfather of Self Discipline and personal development, and expectations were high as I hit the play button. I wasn't to be disappointed.

The focus this time around is authoring for personal gain, although the casual writer will take an immense amount of value from this title in terms of technique and time management.

From the planning of framework of your manuscript, to the all important editing phase (which Meadows instructs should be done a week or two after the finished draft for an important reason I won't spoil in this review)

Topics covered include deciding whether fiction or non fiction is for you, addressing the self doubt every unpublished author experiences before taking the plunge, determining your niche in your chosen field using digital and traditional book retail channels, self discipline around diet and exercise which contributes to a healthy state of mind from which to work, and the use of pen names to test the waters.

I'm not sure if Martin will ever see this review, as in wrapping up the book he discusses the subjective value of reviews online, particularly long after a book has been published and work on a new project has begun. I have emailed him personally to thank him for the impact this book has had on me, in motivating me to put more focus into my own work.

My Audible library is over 100 strong, with 95% of my titles in the Self help and personal development space, and Meadows has rapidly become my favourite author for his pragmatic and concise approach to a generally long winded genre. A must read!

For those interested in a more general overview of Self Discipline, I would also highly recommend '365 Days of Self Discipline' by Meadows, with an actionable piece of advice for each day of a full calendar year.

I'm off to start my next title :)

really good book

It’s the first book by Martin Meadows that I bought and read because the subject interests me immensely. When later I was offered a free audiobook from the author for an honest review I didn’t hesitate to accept it. I appreciate the author’s honesty throughout the book. You will not find there any Law of Attraction incantations to the Universe as in some self-help books but a lot of practical tips from someone who obviously knows the reality of writing and presents it as it is: hard work that can be extremely satisfying and rewarding, provided you exercise daily self-discipline instead of dreaming (or “suffering”) about writing. I definitely recommend the book to anybody who wants to develop the writer’s mindset.
