Summary

The latest groundbreaking tome from Tim Ferriss, the number-one New York Times best-selling author of The 4-Hour Workweek

From the author:

"For the last two years, I've interviewed more than 200 world-class performers for my podcast, The Tim Ferriss Show. The guests range from super celebs (Jamie Foxx, Arnold Schwarzenegger, etc.) and athletes (icons of powerlifting, gymnastics, surfing, etc.) to legendary Special Operations commanders and black-market biochemists. For most of my guests, it’s the first time they’ve agreed to a two-to-three-hour interview. This unusual depth has helped make The Tim Ferriss Show the first business/interview podcast to pass 100 million downloads.

"This book contains the distilled tools, tactics, and 'inside baseball' you won't find anywhere else. It also includes new tips from past guests, and life lessons from new 'guests' you haven't met.

"What makes the show different is a relentless focus on actionable details. This is reflected in the questions. For example: What do these people do in the first 60 minutes of each morning? What do their workout routines look like, and why? What books have they gifted most to other people? What are the biggest wastes of time for novices in their field? What supplements do they take on a daily basis?

"I don't view myself as an interviewer. I view myself as an experimenter. If I can't test something and replicate results in the messy reality of everyday life, I'm not interested."

"Everything [in this audiobook] has been vetted, explored, and applied to my own life in some fashion. I've used dozens of the tactics and philosophies in high-stakes negotiations, high-risk environments, or large business dealings. The lessons have made me millions of dollars and saved me years of wasted effort and frustration.

"I created this book, my ultimate notebook of high-leverage tools, for myself. It's changed my life, and I hope the same for you."

Life hacks from insecure over-achievers

Tim Ferriss is an American author of self help books. In Tools of Titans he compares notes with high flyers from the worlds of sport, business and entertainment to produce a toolkit for changing lives for the better on the broad themes of Health, Wealth and Wise. There are multiple narrators of this book, none of them are the actual contributors.

Each section contains an introduction to each of the Titans who provide answers to a template of questions which begin with their social media and website information before moving on to each of their "animal spirits" and questions about product / book recommendations (unsurprisingly, many of the recommendations are for their own products), their best $100 purchase and advice to their 30 year old self. It all becomes a bit formulaic and predictable after a while as each of the Titans attempt to come up with something profound and interesting about themselves.

Much of the advice concerns exercise routines, extreme diets and recommended food supplements in the section on Health which also covers the use of experimental drugs. In the Wealth section we hear from several angel investors who outline their thought processes when investing and in Wise we hear several scholarly words of wisdom such as "the purpose of life is a life with purpose" and others, such as "slow is smooth, smooth is fast" which are quite bizarre.

This is a long book at over 22 hours and is also padded out by repeats of some of the author's previous podcasts including "17 questions that have dramatically changed my life". Many of the contributors to this book are undoubtedly interesting people and I would like to find out more about some of them. Despite the length, however, Tools of Titans comes over as being superficial and, at times, merely an extended advert for the contributors' books and products.

Hard work :-/

I kept hearing this book being recommended and finally took the plunge. I made it about 11 hours through the 22 hr 41 min total length and doubt very much that I will finish it. The Twitter handles of each guest are annoying in audio format, and the "spirit animals" of each guest had me rolling my eyes every time (apart from the guy who said "Gummi Bear" lol). It is discouraging and annoying to listen to the mini biography of each super-achiever over and over again, and most of the time the guests come over as self-indulgent and taking themselves far too seriously. The whole book is very fragmented, and in my opinion there isn't enough value for us average souls, hoping for some practical and applicable life hacks. If you are an absolute sports/fitness nut who has a large amount of disposable income to spend on the recommendations then you'd probably get a lot out of the first section. If you are an entrepreneur, throwing themselves wholeheartedly in at the deep end, and prepared to do whatever it takes to succeed then you will like the second section. I found myself skipping a lot (a LOT) of this book, which is actually recommended by the author at the start as he readily admits not all of it is for everyone, but this is not practical or safe to do when you are driving, which I imagine a lot of listeners would be doing. I really like Tim Ferriss as a person - he comes across as a nice chap, his TED talks have a lot of value, and his website is excellent. I imagine it's easier to deal with this title in a book form, but I struggled with this audio version. It just isn't practical for the Average Joe. Not sure if I'm missing something as there are so many five star reviews...I hate to leave a negative review but it's important to be honest, and maybe this will help someone else.

Another dissapointment

I was hoping this would be better than Tribe of Mentors in audio format but alas, it remains full of Twitter handles (why is this necessary in audio format???) and the same monotonic, souless voice narrates most of it. The bug shame of this is that it overpowers the many valuable messages in the book. I recommend sticking to the physical copy of this book and save your credit for something a little less frustrating.

Does not work as an audio book

This does not work as an audio book. There is some attempt to pre-empt the style and context of the book but that itself doesn’t work either. It’s muddled and draining.

If you’re only going to get through one book...

...make this the one. Great source material - I was already a big fan of the podcast - and exquisitely put together. Inspiration in almost every bite. A collection of Ferriss’s best content from podcasts and conversations can, the book manages to be objective, keep an open mind without being judgemental. Wide angled, this collection of insights into great minds, or at least the minds of great performers in their fields, I believe it can help open your mind to the world around you and, in my case, how I, never a success in the scale of these people, can make a success of me, in my eyes. After all, that is what the whole this is all about.

Simply fails to deliver between reading and listening.

Dulcet narration reading out Twitter handles, chemical compositions & switching of narrators lost me as a listener trying to keep embers of any storyline alive.

I’m sure as a book this would be wonderful but my goodness if there was an example of the differences between speech writers and speakers, readers and listeners, please painfully indulge in this audiobook.

This does not transfer well to an audio book.

I'd heard a lot of good things about this book. It doesn't work as an audio book.

Nasty slurping noises

The content of the book was entertaining and interesting, but when Tim Ferriss narrates, he slurps his coffee loudly during the narration, which i found to be a horrible noise and it put me off listening.

All over the place

Unnecessary profanity and just generally all over the place. Should have been condensed and used to make multiple books possibly that focused on individual topics like business and health and fitness. You just never know where it's going next and this is extremely annoying to listen to as an audio book. This is a purchase I regret
