About this listen

My name is Peter Grant, and until January, I was just probationary constable in that mighty army for justice known to all right-thinking people as the Metropolitan Police Service (and as the Filth to everybody else). My only concerns in life were how to avoid a transfer to the Case Progression Unit - we do paperwork so real coppers don't have to - and finding a way to climb into the panties of the outrageously perky WPC Leslie May. Then one night, in pursuance of a murder inquiry, I tried to take a witness statement from someone who was dead but disturbingly voluble, and that brought me to the attention of Inspector Nightingale, the last wizard in England.

Now I'm a Detective Constable and a trainee wizard, the first apprentice in 50 years, and my world has become somewhat more complicated: nests of vampires in Purley, negotiating a truce between the warring god and goddess of the Thames, and digging up graves in Covent Garden...and there's something festering at the heart of the city I love, a malicious, vengeful spirit that takes ordinary Londoners and twists them into grotesque mannequins to act out its drama of violence and despair.

The spirit of riot and rebellion has awakened in the city, and it's falling to me to bring order out of chaos - or die trying.

An enthralling and at times hilarious crime thriller audiobook, book 1 of the unabridged Rivers of London: PC Peter Grant written by Ben Aaronovitch is brilliantly narrated by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. Listeners are taken into the depths of London’s hidden world of vampires, spirits, gods and goddesses of the mighty Thames. Join the impossibly funny PC Peter Grant as he leaves his policing life behind to become an apprentice to the last wizard of England, and listen intently as they embark on a battle against London’s sinister vampire underworld. Available from Audible now.

I bought this book on a whim, liking the sound of the blurb describing it. I wasn't sure what I'd get, but I loved it.

It is very silly, in an adult kind of way; think Dr Who crossed with Harry Potter, but written for grown-ups and with a lot of one-liners. I would've rated it as 5*, but for the narrator. He is very breathy, which was bad enough, but his timing was also terrible in places.

If you're expecting a serious detective story, you'll be sorely disappointed; go into it expecting to be entertained in a light, unusual way with inexplicable characters and a rather clever plot, and you'll love it.

Refreshing

I loved this book for its unusual theme and pace! Kobna Holdbrook-Smith was the perfect choice for narrator! I will never walk the streets of London again without just wondering if it all might be true!!!

Any additional comments?

I got this after reading some good reviews and a friend recommending it. Have to say I'm grateful as I loved it, hated having to remove my earphones when the kids came home. The story is set in modern Britain with the added bonus of magic, the plot moves along wonderfully and the central characters aren't perfect but 'real' which helps a lot. I'll definitely be getting more of the series.

Wonderful Book

I was so dissapointed with this book having read the reviews.
No this is not my normal Genre but wanted something different.. THe book started well but I do not know why it just missed the mark for me
Almost funny
Almost well narated
Almost clever
In fact I almost finished it but could not face the last hour
just never hit the heights that others thought. Oh well I suppose thats why there are so many Audible books to choose from

Almost awful

An original and engaging author who knows how to skirt the edge of possibility, with great characters and a horrid dog!

An aspect of London we don't often think about...

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Really wanted to get into this book, loved some aspects - a promising start - great characters - but the story just became so daft...

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I did not bother to completely finish the book, only by 20 minutes!

Would you listen to another book narrated by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith?

Initially I did enjoy the narrater, but after a while he became rather breathy and seemed to pick up speed and surely galloped through the book! probably not such a bad thing

Was Rivers of London worth the listening time?

No

Any additional comments?

Thoroughly enjoyed the story and loved the narration. However I did find it a little confusing and the ending was strange.

A modern Harry Potter!

As a Londoner I love a book that takes place in London and with the added bonus of the supernatural how could you not love it. I don't know how Ben does it but he really gets inside a Londoner head. I love the way he describes the surrounding and you can literally picture where Peter is in London. I adore Peter as he happens not to be perfect and makes the mistakes that everyone would although you hope as a policeman he would sometime be a bit more observant. A good listen though.

Love a London book

Pacey, dark, comic, as twisty and entwined as the rivers of London, this is an surprising, entertaining story, told by an unlikely and reluctant hero. Policing London was always going to be a challenge, but Peter had no idea it would involve unlearning everything he thought he knew and risk losing control of his mind...

Supernatural Policing is full of surprises...
