Great Start to a Great Series
- By Karen Beresford on 19-02-18
Summary
Six rare powers govern the land of Adamah. Possessing one demands entrance to the king's army. To refuse means death.
For hundreds of years, dark clouds covered the skies of Adamah, and an ageless king ruled. Those who emerged with one of six extraordinary Shay powers were forced into the king's army, an unmatched force with inhuman strength, speed, accuracy, perception, empathy, and healing. With the army behind him, the king - a man who wields all six abilities - was invincible and unquestioned in his rule.
To most, serving the king was an honor. But for others, it was a fate worse than death. When 17-year-old Nolan Trividar witnesses the transformation of his brother from kind to cruel after entering the king's army, he vows never to follow the same path.
Powers of the Six take you to another world where the smallest person can do extraordinary things, the undead infest the night, and the sun emits more than just warmth and light.

.Magic,Myth,Magnificent .
This was my first from Kristal Shaff and Gary Furlong ,Waw what a team ! and what an introduction!!! Wow. So deep, complex, gripping, riddled with a dark dirty underworld of secrets..Have to read more for Kristal soon ... I am Hooked!
Now the story, oh my goodness i was not expecting this at all, so intense, so gripping, so emotional, so awe inspiring.Every once in a while, a book comes along that shatters your expectations. Case in instance is a book so explosive and intense, deeply enthralling and equally disturbing. A book you'll proudly hold dear And to have this book ,a master piece in Magic ,Myth and the supernatural. So complex was the groundwork of the kings rule and his army's powers and transformations that I had to listen to a few chapters again to grasp its enormity. This is one of the best books I have listened to period .
I was hanging on every word spoken, I couldn't wait to listen more, Grabbing every chance to If you are a fan of this genre ... actually even if you are not I would sugest you listen to this book.
Loved the ending.... loved it, I had to do a sort of double take as in OMG 'What is going to happen with them?' I can not wait to listen to the sequel. Gary Furlong was ineradicable he pulled feelings from me like a Master. Spellbinding. I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator. As always This review is my honest opinion. There is so far to go with this series I just can't wait !

Overall an engaging and enjoyable listen
I received this book free but give my own honest review:
On the whole I really enjoyed this book, The book takes its time to build up the characters and the world they are set in, there are 6 ‘powers’ , one of which can appear in some individuals- They are Strength, Accuracy, Healing, Empathy, Perception, and Speed. But if you do have them you have to go to work for the king that governs the lands.
Nolan and Alec (the main characters) meet and go on an epic adventure together to go their own way; it’s really nice seeing this trust and friendship develop.
The story has some epic fantasy elements and kept my interest.
The one negative part for me was the fact that the only ‘LGBT+’ type Character element that appears to have any mention in the book is a villain- (I’m not against this in a character per-say, but I do find it disappointing when there’s only a single one and it’s the bad guy and all others appear heterosexual).
I listen to this as an audiobook and at the time of writing this review there isn’t the second audiobook otherwise I will be buying it and listening to it, I may have a look for the kindle edition and find some time to read what happens next.

Battle weary
This began so well but within two hours of the end the battles became meaningless and acted as filler. The lurking misogyny became totally unbearable. I'd think the story was wrapping up but another chapter would start and my heart would sink. In the end I was wishing they'd all just die...until I realized most of them had, at least once and some of them twice.

I dont know how there isn't a single bad review but I've been listening for a good 4 hours and the mc has used his power all of one time. at first I thought I'd missed a chapter somehow, the story started in the middle of a scene with no explanations on background or power. I have no clue who the main character is, what his powers are (he doesnt use them) and to be honest it's just boring

Any additional comments?
I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I was hooked from the beginning of the book, which is a good thing because there are not that many books/audio out their that hook me from the start.
The one thing I was not expecting was the violence (torture and bulling) however they were not graphic and it did not put me off the book. There is rape in this book (which occurs behind doors) against both females and males from the same perpetrator which I did not believe in. Not the rape part but of why the character did it especially after we find out who that person is. I know it is to do with control but I still would like to know why they would even consider that act. In my opinion it did not fit in with the character.
However, overall I really liked it and there are a few twists in this book which I was not expecting.

An Amazing Read
In a world where religion is shown by the powers of Brin, and those given the gifts of light are revered above others but whose world is still a unforgiving and cruel place to live.
Some resistance to the ruling powers is to be expected but salavation is to be found for maybe everyone in those who run from their powers and those who want to respect their brin given powers rather than abuse them and to serve the people.
The typical unknown hero soon develops and with more twists and turns happening each moment to keep this usual story fresh and exciting with a top class narrator making audible worth its price.
I can't wait for the next episode in the series.
This story was gifted to me in exchange for my honest and unbiased review and as such is my own opinion.

Epic Fantasy is reborn
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. I had to give this one my highest rating because it was a story that pulled you in from word one and didn't let you go until the end. Both the author and the narrator did a wonderful job. The author in creating a world so well that you feel as if you are living there and the narrator for bringing it to life with such passion. The whole thing was reminiscent of the best of the sword and sorcery epic stories such as The Drenai Saga, The Earthsea Trilogy, Elric, or Tales of the Eternal Champion yet it is also so fresh and new that it was a lovely change to read it and know that there are more of the same to come.

A new and fresh "magic" system.
The story is refreshingly new. The author introduces a new type of magic system/ability system that is intriguing yet not overly complicated. The book has a lot of action in it to keep you listening, but, more importantly, the story moves at a good paces and never has a slow or boring point.
My only criticism is that I would like to have seen more character development and relationship building between the characters. The character development is there, along with some relationship building, but the development could deepen somewhat.
The narration is simply superb. The narrator does a good job in bringing the story to life. 5/5

Loved it!
*I requested and was granted a code for this audio book for an honest review*
So, THIS! Holy moley it's been a long time since I read a magical epic adventure, and I found I was really craving one. And OH! Did this ever fit the bill! Intrigue, action, and a beautiful blend of different magical elements made for a fun, fast-paced read. Together with characters I came to care about (Yes, I cried at a point), this is a series I MUST continue, and is going to be added to my favorites of the year. Many of the elements were new to me, which always makes it more exciting, and the ones I was already familiar with had little twists to them to make them fresh. There were characters I loathed, those I loved, and those I pitied, and I thought they were very well written.
Now, for the narration. Dude. DUDE. This may be my new favorite narrator! Not only was his voice smooth and pleasing, but he seemed to know the story. The voices he did (I swear, one of them sounded just like Hagrid haha) were perfect and flawless, and it didn't feel forced in the slightest. There was no issue with switching to females speaking. The speed and tone were just...PERFECT! And yeah, I admit it, I'm a sucker for an accent. But even without, his reading voice is just amazing. I feel like he could read an encyclopedia entry on watching grass grow and it would be great LOL. I think I’ve become a total fangirl…
SO! Now that I’m finished gushing, here’s the lowdown: READ THIS. It is just so good! Anyone who likes epic adventures should thoroughly enjoy this. I definitely urge you to try the audiobook, but really, this book is amazing on its own.
Bob say: 5 Platypires because I’m not allowed to go higher!

Ok, I'm listening thinking this is a good four star, but then I realized; I'm listening instead of getting priorities done, I'm staying up late to hear more, the wife looks at me and says " take the earbuds out, I'm talking to you". That kind of listening is 5 star :-) .

Where's the sequel in audio form?
I love everything about this book, from the superpowers to the character relations to the promise of the next story. Which I really hope they use the same narrator for. Seriously, what's taking them so long to record it?
This isn't the first story I know of to use 'magic' stones as the source of powers, but I like that the powers are what they are, and the idea of a tournament to find the gifted ones. I also like the way the 'power corrupts' theme is explored in the person of the king, versus the 'choices matter' theme embodied in Nolan and the choices he makes along with the fears he has about his powers.
Nolan is my favorite character, followed by Alec and then Emery. Nolan sees himself as weak, mostly because of his older brother, but he's actually a brave guy. Alec transforms from a cocky teen with a bit of spite to a trustworthy friend and finally learns valuable lessons about his own weakness. Emery seems to see a lot of himself in Nolan without realizing it. Emery helps Nolan see himself and his abilities more clearly, and Nolan does the same for him in the end.

Not my cup of tea
Not a bad story, and the magic system was somewhat original. though it felt like was trying to channel Brandon Sanderson's types of magic. at the end of the day I was bored by a cunning, cowardly MC and a lovesick puppy sidekick. I've lost my taste for teen romance in the previous years. I'm going to keep the book and in the future maybe I'll finish it.

Interesting Story
I got this ARC via audiobook boom. When I first started listening to this story I was prepared to be bored but the author surprised me after the story took off. It took several chapters to get there but when it did it was awesome. The ending was a surprise and a slight cliffhanger although the book did come to a conclusion. You know that there is more to follow to complete the story. The plot twists and battle scenes were well done. The narrator fit the story as well.
