Summary
Book two in the Bequin series
Alizebeth Bequin's world has been turned upside-down. Now she must choose who she will follow as Inquisitors Eisenhorn and Ravenor battle to discover the secrets at the heart of Queen Mab.
Listen to it because
The latest chapter in Dan Abnett's Inquisition saga is here, and it's packed with shocking twists and stunning revelations that will change the way you look at the Warhammer 40,000 universe forever.
The story
In the mysterious city of Queen Mab, the forces of light and darkness are locked in a murderous struggle for truth. The dedicated agents of the Holy Inquisition battle with their shadowy counterparts, the infamous Cognitae, to discover the encrypted identity of the enigmatic, all-powerful King in Yellow. Caught at the heart of this struggle is the pariah Alizebeth Bequin. Will she stand with the Inquisition or with the Cognitae that raised her? And if she chooses the Inquisition, will it be the wise but ruthless Ravenor or his rival, the denounced heretic Eisenhorn? Bequin must withstand an onslaught of angels, daemons, and even the monstrous warriors of the Traitor Legions, to unpick the greatest riddle of her life.
The beloved characters of Eisenhorn and Ravenor return, as implaccable adversaries in a novel of esoteric mystery, macabre intrigue, and vivid action, where the revelation of true identity could mean death...or might shake the Imperium to its very foundations.

Best 40k book in yonks
It's got a good story, good characters, some good Grimdank. Dan spent less time describing the tightness of body gloves than he did in Eisenhorn and Ravenor which was nice. Thanks Dan!

The king in Yellow!
Or is it Gold!! I listened to pariah and this back to back and my only disappointment is having to wait for Pandaemonium to be released, outstanding book and superb narration

A Masterpiece
I stepped into the Bequin series with slight trepidation, not having heard Helen's (the narrator’s) work before and was almost instantly captivated by her performance. Never before have I looked at my audiable browser willing that clock to turn back and there be more story to come.
Penitent, is a seminal work for D.A.. He perfectly courts the 40K tropes, while simultaneously building upon his previous works breathing life into this world. He balances his work between the strength of bolter and blade, before he masterfully allows the true horror of the universe to creep in.
The author stamps his mark on this world, as the setting subtly becomes Victorian London. Accompanying this shift come some charming parallels, be it (spoilers) a caricature of Aleister Crowely, or a Ravengaurd fighting in a “murderous” way. You feel like the author is there, giving you the subtle wink as each of these quirks appear.
My only wish, is that we don’t have to wait so long for the next instalment. However, if it’s this good, it is most definitely worth the wait.

Big picture information in a bit of a clunk story.
Okay, so a bit similar to the first book this one revels a lot of big picture information, and the story seems to have been made to fit around that information. So the story seems a bit clunky, and flows a bit oddly.
For instance a character was written out at the end of the previous book, just to be written back in at the start of this one. Why? To me it seems orchestrated to get the characters to stumble across a central place, and a character in a very haphazard way.
In other words a lot seems to be forced into the right shape to get the big picture information out there.
The big picture information is very big indeed, and a lot of people will love the book for it. I just wished for a stronger and more organically told story to unfold it.
I will probably read the next at some point, mostly for the "big picture" stuff I guess.

Sensational
As with most things Abnett touches, absolute dynamite and utilising again a first-person, driving perspective. Didn't expect a lot but in this the many mysterious parties play their hand, tantalising you even more for the next lore reveal. Narration is decent, though sometimes stumbles a little with the more bassy male voices.
