Story
This is the age of addiction, a condition so epidemic, so all encompassing and ubiquitous, that unless you are fortunate enough to be an extreme case, you probably don't know that you have it. What unhealthy habits and attachments are holding your life together? Are you unconsciously dependent on food? Bad relationships? A job that doesn't fulfill you? Numb, constant perusal of your phone, looking for what? My qualification for writing this book is not that I am better than you, it's that I am worse.

Dr Gabor Maté is one of the world’s most revered thinkers on the psychology of addiction. His radical findings - based on decades of work with patients challenged by catastrophic drug addiction and mental illness - are reframing how we view all human development. In this award-winning modern classic, Gabor Maté takes a holistic and compassionate approach to addiction, whether to alcohol, drugs, sex, money or anything self-destructive. He presents it not as a discrete phenomenon confined to a weak-willed few but as a continuum that runs through (and even underpins) our society.

In illuminating the nature of this shift in consciousness, Tolle describes in detail how our current ego-based state of consciousness operates. Then gently, and in very practical terms, he leads us into this new consciousness. We will come to experience who we truly are and learn to live and breathe freely.

Summary
Millions of recovering addicts have been helped by the traditional 12-Step Program of Alcoholics Anonymous, but many find themselves unable to relate to some of the language and religious tone of the Steps. Kevin Griffin offers an alternative - a new approach to the 12-Step Program based on Buddhist teachings and time-honored meditation practices.
In this six-session audio course, Griffin shares personal insights from his own struggle with addiction and offers guided meditation practices to support each step of the recovery process. Listeners will discover universally accessible ways to relate to the idea of a Higher Power, how the wisdom from the Four Noble Truths and the concept of karma can be applied to AA's life review, and much more.
Highlights:
- The Twelve Steps and the Four Noble Truths - parallels and shared insights from two paths to liberation
- Mindfulness practice - an essential tool for facing the moment-by-moment challenges of addiction
- Your "higher power" - how the practice of mindfulness itself can serve as the focus of your faith
- Understanding karma - why the Buddha's teachings on cause and effect are especially meaningful to addicts
- How "turning our will and our lives over" can serve as a call to remain steadfast in our meditation practice
- Using the spirit of rigorous honesty from the Twelve Steps to fuel our spiritual growth
- Insights for using your personal inventory, forgiveness, and humility in self-empowering ways
- Six sessions of mindfulness practices, Buddhist wisdom, and powerful reflections on the Twelve-Step path to recovery from expert teacher Kevin Griffin

You don't need to be a addict to enjoy this read.
A very personal and deft exposition of the intersection of the 12 steps with the core principles of Buddhism. So beautifully and fluently read by the author it doesn't feel like he is reading at all. It is a wonderful introduction to both philosophy's and essential reading for anyone interested in how Buddhism can enrich everyday life and improve relationships with others.
A jewel of a book.

Awesome, puts things in perspective
I actually got this book by mistake, I thought I was getting a book on the 12 steps but I had no idea that this book was directly related to Buddhism. So initially I was a little disappointed, but it was actually a really good mistake, I guess God knows why everything in life happens for a reason.
I had zero knowledge about Buddhism, nor was I really interested in it, I am a firm believer in God and Jesus, but I do not like attachments to any specific religion, so I decided to give the book a shot. And, after listening to the first chapter, I just kept on going, and realized that you don't have to be any specific religion to listen to this book, the way he relates the 12 steps to the teachings of Buddhism is actually really cool, I really enjoyed this and it was a learning experience. I also really enjoyed doing the meditations and is a book that I will listen to many times over. I recommend it for anyone that wants to look at the 12 steps from a different perspective

For someone with almost 3 years sobriety and trying to find ways to blend the 12 steps into my dharma studies and practice I found this audiobook so valuable. I wrote pages of notes to go back to. It encouraged me to purchase his other books and seek out a meditation retreat in my local area in 2019 he is hosting. It was truly that impactful. I love my meditation and yoga practice because it helped get me sober, the 12 steps have kept me sober. Now blending them together i think is my magical formula for long term sobriety.

Loved this!!!
This book is just awesome! The author narrates. He has a gentle, calm voice. It’s like your closest friend is sitting with you having a heart to heart. Never “preachy” or condescending. He tells his story with sincerity. This is a book that is about Buddhism, but more about the 12 steps. You do not have to be Buddhist to gain a lot from this book. The main focus is mindfulness and right thinking and action and consequences. I absolutely loved it and bought several more of his books after this one!!

Good content, poor organization
What did you like best about One Breath, Twelve Steps? What did you like least?
I liked the introduction to how the 12 Steps and the Dharma complement and support one another. I think the 12 Steps tell you what to do and the Dharma tells you how to do it.I didn't care for the way the meditations were interspersed throughout the dialogue. If walking or driving while listening, it's usually not recommended to relax to that extent, so I had to interrupt my listening experience until I got home. I would have preferred to have had the meditations in a separate section that one could refer to when in a more conducive setting.
Could you see One Breath, Twelve Steps being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Heavens no!
