Summary

The inspiration for the BBC series of the same name.

Fresh out of Glasgow Veterinary College, to the young James Herriot 1930s Yorkshire seems to offer an idyllic pocket of rural life in a rapidly changing world. But from his erratic new colleagues, brothers Siegfried and Tristan Farnon, to incomprehensible farmers, herds of semiferal cattle, a pig called Nugent and an overweight Pekingese called Tricki Woo, James find he is on a learning curve as steep as the hills around him. And when he meets Helen, the beautiful daughter of a local farmer, all the training and experience in the world can't help him....

Since they were first published, James Herriot's memoirs have sold millions of copies and entranced generations of animal lovers. Charming, funny and touching, All Creatures Great and Small is a heartwarming story of determination, love and companionship from one of Britain's best-loved authors.

Critic reviews

"I grew up reading James Herriot's books and I'm delighted that 30 years on, they are still every bit as charming, heartwarming and laugh-out-loud funny as they were then." (Kate Humble)

music is not needed

over all one the best version i have had in years. this was to go with my book, unfortunately some lines seem to have been edited out. Some i can understand others seem an odd choice. it dose not detract from the book. the music is a put over done.

Captivating

I so enjoyed every moment of this book. I was lost in the unfolding of each chapter and sad when I reached the end.
I’d highly recommend this to everyone 😊

Timeless, charming and funny

I am revisiting these stories after many years and once again I am entranced. His descriptions are so evocative I felt like I was there. The humour is such that I was laughing out loud. These stories are timeless, charming and funny.

Wonderful

An amazing listen. I have listened to this book countless times and would definitely recommend. The book is really engaging and is all about animals which I love. These stories have inspired me to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. I like the Narrator as well and have found it difficult to listen to any other audio book. Definitely a must listen/read.

Charming. Just charming.

As a lass of the Yorkshire dales, now living ‘Darn sarf’ I could almost smell my homeland while listening.
Laughed and cried and loved it all.

After reading the books, it was a treat to find this recording to listen to. The narrator does a lovely job with accents and voice changes.
Recommended.
