Summary

Alex Lake’s day job is all about helping people, especially children. She cares about them passionately and does everything in her power to rescue them from those who mean them harm.

When the case of three-year-old Ottilie Wade comes to her attention, Alex finds herself completely unable to detach from the child the way she should. She feels an overpowering need to make a real difference in little Ottilie’s life, but no one is prepared to believe that Ottilie is in danger.

In the end, Alex makes a decision that has consequences for her, her family and Ottilie - consequences that no one, least of all Alex, could have foreseen.

Critic reviews

"With an unflinching gaze, based on her own traumatic experiences, she brings us life in all its raw intensity. The result of such honesty, insight and understanding is a string of gripping novels that bristle with drama, complexity and heart-rending reality." ( Lancashire Evening Post)
"A moving and powerful story...I couldn’t put it down!" ( Peterborough Telegraph, 9/10 stars)

An unforgettable read!

If you could sum up No Child of Mine in three words, what would they be?

Insightful, gripping, unforgetable

What was one of the most memorable moments of No Child of Mine?

The first time Little Otilly spoke.

Have you listened to any of Julia Franklin’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I particularly enjoyed Julia's narration. She gave all the characters unique ways of speaking that you almost felt they were in the room with you.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I couldn't put it down once I had started. I often found myself worrying about little Otilly when doing my chores at home and I often had to pinch my self to remind myself that she was not real.

Any additional comments?

This book is unforgettable, and if you choose to read it, Please read the sequel "Don't let me go" I had to take a break from reading for at least one week as I needed time to detach myself from the lives of the characters. Susan Lewis gave all the characters enough depth to enable the reader to empathise with them. She did not sugarcoat their misery and where there was joy, it was explosively expressed.

Loved it!

I loved the book and have read the whole series several times. It is such a hard story to read/listen too, but I have taken the characters to my heart. Susan Lewis is such an amazing author.
I really enjoyed listening to the audio book and will probably listen to it several times too!
I only gave it 4 stars for performance because some of the accents were a bit off putting to start with, but I soon got used to them.

hard to listen in some parts due to story .

Definitely gives the listener an insight into social work, the red tape and feelings of knowing something is not right , yet having to wait until you can prove it.
Very much enjoyed the story even though difficult at times. I couldn't wait to carry on listening.
would recommend.

This narrator should never go near an audiobook

Narrator was beyond awful!!!! Jesus Christ! Everyone sounded like a whiny middle aged woman. It was most grating with Alex, cos she's supposed to be 28.

Decent listen

I enjoyed this book & it kept me largely gripped despite being a lengthy listen. I did find the ending a bit disappointing..the last 2hrs of the book got a bit far fetched & it ended up feeling too fantastical by the end. I would recommend it though as I still enjoyed it.

My only other criticism is of the narrator..she was actually very good but given the main character was late 20s, the narrator’s voice was much older & didn’t fit which I found got on my nerves a bit although it didn’t ruin it or anything

Brilliant till the last part.

Was enjoying the brilliant story, but towards the end it descended into farce! Very disappointing.
Storyteller was stretching it with the accents too!
