About this listen
He was born to write mysteries. Now, he has to solve them.
When Dashiell Dawson Dane moves across the country to a small seaside town called Hastings Rock, he has one goal: get away from his ex. Okay, two goals - because he wouldn't mind a little help from his new boss, celebrity mystery author Vivienne Carver. With Vivienne's mentorship, Dash is sure he can get over this blasted case of writer's block and start telling his own stories again.
The only problem? Vivienne is murdered on Dash's first night at Hemlock House. And when police find a secret passage that connects Dash's bedroom to Vivienne's, they're sure they know who did it. Now Dash has to prove his innocence - and the only way to do that is to figure out who really killed Vivienne Carver.

Dawson accepts a new job to overcome his writer's block, but is surprised by the death of his boss, the writer Vivienne Carver. Everything points out to him as the murderer, and he must prove it was not him.
The narration was very well done, giving more emotion to the book.
Awesome book, great narrator

This was awesome! I loved the narration first of all. That was an excellent choice! Andrew Gibson is a new narrator for me but I certainly plan to look for more books by him. If you like audios, have no fear here. A cozy mystery with no sex (yet, but who knows) and I don't recall any swearing just the implied swearing off page.
As for the story, this was just a very fun and great story. I loved the characters, the murder mystery and the budding (it's waiting to bud really) romance between our MC Dash and Deputy Bobby, lol. From the blurb you already know that there is a murder afoot and of course Dash is encouraged by his merry band of misfits to solve it. The fact that Dash has a vested interest in solving the murder helps too because who wants to go away for a murder they didn't commit? [Which is funny because the whole ending is about the fact that (real spoiler coming) [Vivienne isn't actually dead. She conspired with the police chief to get a body from the morgue (pretty sure) and planted it to make people think Vivienne was dead but it was really so she could flee and get away with murder! Yes, she framed someone (grr, blanking on her name) for murder, then also killed someone else in the present day and was trying to get out of the country to escape all kinds of legal problems. (hide spoiler)]. See, told you it was a real spoiler. (hide spoiler)]
I kinda gave away a lot in that spoiler so don't read it if you don't want to know. I had not been expecting that ending, but that makes it all the better. What I really enjoyed though was just seeing Dash be himself, and interact with the other characters, see how his mind worked. He's very snarky and reminded me a lot of other snarky characters I love so this was just the perfect story for me.
I do highly recommend and I really want to continue this series. 5 stars all around.

After getting my head around Gregory Ashe’s eclectic bunch of characters and finally managing to get their names straight, I quickly settled down to enjoy Mystery Magnet.
Dashiell (call me Dash) Dawson Dane arrives in the small seaside town of Hastings Rock to take up a position as assistant to the renowned mystery author, Vivienne Carver, and is almost immediately plunged into a murder - her murder in fact.
Dash, himself a mystery writer, though at present suffering a severe case of writers block, quickly realises that he must find her killer, because if he doesn’t, he is apparently the only name in the frame for the murder.
Gregory Ashe’s choice of narrator, Andrew Gibson, is absolutely perfect for witty, snarky, Dash and the cast of diverse and fascinating characters. I recognised his voice immediately as one I love listening to, albeit in a different genre. Andrew Gibson’s vocal range is impressive for both the female and male characters and I’m more than happy he’s been added to this writer’s list of narrators. A dream team for sure. I’m looking forward to the next books in The Last Picks series if this is the quality of writing/performance we can expect.
Highly recommended.

Our protagonist is Dashiell (“just Dash”) Dawson Dane, an aspiring mystery writer who gets a job as PA to celebrity mystery author Vivienne Carver in the small Oregon town of Hastings Rock at Vivienne’s coast-side mansion, Hemlock House.
His new job gets off to a terrible start when, returning from a coffee-run on his first morning, Dash sees a body floating in the water just beyond the cliffs – a body wearing the very distinctive red sweater Vivienne was wearing the day before. When the sheriff and his deputies arrive, they are very suspicious of the new guy on the block; Dash can’t prove he was alone and asleep all last night, and when a secret passageway is discovered, connecting his bedroom with Vivienne’s, he’s convinced he’s the prime suspect in her murder. And what is any self-respecting mystery writer to do in those circumstances? Why, he must turn amateur sleuth to prove his innocence by catching the real killer, of course!
I haven’t read too many cosies, but it seems that where they really stand or fall is on the quality of the characterisation – and one of the many things Gregory Ashe excels at is creating layered, nuanced and likeable characters. Dash is awkward and endearing, he clearly has self-esteem problems and anxiety issues, and his narrative voice is full of humour - with a delicious streak of snark - and self-awareness. I liked him a lot, and thankfully, his determination to get to the truth isn’t characterised by his doing really dumb things that put him in danger all the time! And although this is Dash’s show, there’s a lively and well-characterised secondary cast on hand to liven things up.
The writing is deft and fresh; the use of language and descriptions are still recognisably Gregory Ashe, but there’s a lighter note overall that is perfect for the genre. The mystery itself is entertaining and there’s a nice twist near the end, the dialogue is sharp and witty and I really liked the emerging relationships and the interactions between the characters.
Andrew Gibson delivers an excellent performance all-round. He has a great range of character voices (his interpretation of Millie is spot on!) and his portrayal of Dash is an utter delight, the perfect mix of snarky and vulnerable.
Recommend for anyone looking for a quick, lighthearted and expertly narrated listen filled with interesting characters, great dialogue and an engaging protagonist.
Strong start to a new GA series!
