About this listen

We might not be doomed to repeat the past. But it’s pretty likely.

When Dashiell Dawson Dane receives a phone call from his nemesis Vivienne Carver (okay, one of his nemeses), he’s caught off guard—to say the least—by her request: help solve the murder of her brother, who disappeared almost thirty years ago. His gut tells him to say no. But with Bobby preparing to move out of Hemlock House, Dash sees the perfect opportunity for them to spend more time together, whether Bobby likes it or not.

The local police seem convinced that Vivienne was responsible for her brother’s death—an opinion shared by some of her family. But the more Dash investigates, the more convinced he becomes that Vivienne is being set up. Secrets have been accumulating for decades, and the most dangerous lies, Dash knows, are the ones we want to believe the most. After all these years, answers might finally be within reach—and someone is willing to kill to keep the truth from coming out.

At this point if you've made it this far in the series, you're a fan. I truly enjoy this series and mad cast of characters. Dastardly villain Vivienne Carver comes back and drags Dash into a mystery. Who's surprised😁? Not this girl. Dash and murder are synonymous, but at least this time Dash isn't under suspicion since the murder happened thirty years ago. The gang joins in along with the dependable Bobby, and the truth does come out. The set up is kind of tidy but it works for this series.

Highly recommend and honestly, as I said before, if you've made it this far, there should be no doubt this one will be good too. Read with confidence. The narration and Uh-Maz-ING!

4 stars for the story and 5 for the narration.

Great continuation of the series!

In "Again with Feeling", the sixth book in "The Last Picks" series, Gregory Ashe deepens both the mystery and emotional stakes. Dash Dawson is pulled into a decades-old cold case when Vivienne Carver—his longtime nemesis—calls from prison, asking him to investigate her brother’s murder. The body has just been discovered 30 years after his disappearance, and Vivienne insists she’s innocent.

As Dash digs into the tangled web of family secrets, the tension between him and Bobby escalates. Bobby’s dating life and emotional distance push Dash to confront what he truly wants, but their inability to communicate threatens to unravel everything. The mystery is layered and atmospheric, with Ashe masterfully weaving past and present into a suspenseful narrative.

I’ve been along for the wild ride of The Last Picks and have wondered exactly how the series might end. In fact, I thought the end might be in sight during this book. (It's not, but the re-emergence of the first villain made me suspicious.)

Vivienne Carver is in jail for murder. Dash…kind of put her there. Now he’s living in her former home, Hemlock House, and – while not writing novels – is doing amateur sleuthing. People always seem to die around Dash. This time, there’s no fresh murder. Just someone who disappeared thirty years ago, only to reappear now. Since it appears the man was murdered, the logical conclusion is that his sister must have done it – since she’d in jail for killing other people.

When Vivienne asks Dash for help, though, he feels compelled to help. Vivienne claims she’s innocent. That she absolutely did not kill her brother. Dash isn’t certain he believes her but, as she’s a voice from his past, he feels obliged to help. This time, though, he asks Deputy Bobby for help before heading out on his own. As they investigate, though, Vivienne’s prime suspect status remains.

Dash isn’t convinced. The problem? People want the past to stay buried. They don’t want him uncovering secrets. I’ll admit I didn’t see the end coming – but the clues were all there. And Dash had to be the one to solve the mystery.

He also is almost killed and gets into heaps of trouble – all to Bobby’s consternation and the forever amusement of The Last Picks.

I don’t want to spoil the ending, but I really loved it.

Finally, I’ll say Andrew Gibson is a great narrator and I really enjoyed his performance. He’s just the perfect Dash and he’s great with all the other voices too. I really enjoyed this one!

Will they, or won’t they?

YES YES YES! Screaming over this one! First, I was VERY EMOTIONAL throughout this one (as was Dash). Just brought out every feeling, like I am through the ringer with all the emotions I felt. Second, I don't know why it particularly stood out to me in this one, but the 4th wall breaking was just soooo well done. It honestly felt like more like a friend telling you a story than anything else, and I was just there for it. Finally, Bobby Mai. I see you 👀 and I am now even more in NEED of the next book. This series is the best thing to come out of 2024.
