About this listen

Nominated for the Booker Prize 2019.

Shortlisted for the 2019 Women’s Prize for Fiction.

Korede is bitter. How could she not be? Her sister, Ayoola, is many things: the favourite child, the beautiful one, possibly sociopathic. And now Ayoola's third boyfriend in a row is dead.

Korede's practicality is the sisters' saving grace. She knows the best solutions for cleaning blood, the trunk of her car is big enough for a body and she keeps Ayoola from posting pictures of her dinner to Instagram when she should be mourning her 'missing' boyfriend. Not that she gets any credit.

A kind, handsome doctor at the hospital where Korede works is the bright spot in her life. She dreams of the day when he will realise they're perfect for each other. But one day Ayoola shows up to the hospital uninvited and he takes notice. When he asks Korede for Ayoola's phone number, she must reckon with what her sister has become and what she will do about it. Sharp as nails and full of deadpan wit, Oyinkan Braithwaite has written a deliciously deadly debut that's as fun as it is frightening.

I was bowled over by this book. Not by the murders, but by the relationship between two sisters, and the gradual revelation of their family background. By the last lines you understand why the long-suffering Korede cleans up, time and again, after her spoilt, self-centred, knife-toting younger sibling.

Terrific Story-Telling

Very funny and entertaining. The story is nicely brought to life by the narrator. I wish it was longer but enjoyed it nontheless

Entertaining

A great story without the use of the word ‘psychopath’ once! Reasons for why the characters behave as they do are hinted at without being explored, keeping a great pace to the story and allowing the listener to ponder what, why and especially whom is ultimately to ‘blame’. Really, really glad I chose to buy this book.

A great listen

Set in Lagos, this already had my attention as I haven't read anything set there before. I like the fact that the protagonist/narrator wasn't the classic beauty or focus point, and that this was centred upon someone else close to her. Throughout I was trying to assess the psychopathy of the sister, and feel that this could have been explored to an even fuller degree for the reader (I.e. the narrator could have discussed this more), but the book is purposefully short as it isn't trying to give all of the answers. The slowly revealed storyline of the father gives away a lot of answers in a very subtle way, and leaves us as the readers making our own diagnoses on the sisters' childhoods and states of mind. This was a very refreshing and unique read, unlike anything I've read in a long time.

Intriguing and unique

I loved this. I consumed every morsel. The accent didn't disappoint. It was authentic. The story, speaks for itself. I am thoroughly impressed!

Loved this!!
