Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

A village of secrets
It's December 1952, and a dead stranger has been found lodged up the chimney of Holly House in the remote town of Elderby. Is he a simple thief, or a would-be killer? Either way, he wasn't on anyone's Christmas wish list.

A mystery that can't be solved
Inspector Frank Grasby is ordered to investigate. The victim of some unfortunate misunderstandings, he hopes this case will help clear his name. But as is often the way for Grasby, things most certainly don't go according to plan.

A Christmas to remember
Soon blizzards hit the North York Moors, cutting off the village from help, and the local doctor's husband is found murdered. Grasby begins to realise that everyone in Elderby is hiding something - and if he can't uncover the truth soon, the whole country will pay a dreadful price...

brilliantly entertaining

Great characters, witty and adept writing, entertaining and warm. Hoping that there will be many more stories from Frank Grasby's memoirs! Thank you Mr Meyrick!

Thorougly enjoyable change of direction

I found this to be a great tongue in cheek story where the author gets in some interesting comment by the main character with the benefit of it being witten 70 years after the story was set.

Several promises to explain things bode well for future stories - can not wait

Awful

Sorry but I really don’t understand the positive reviews. This was dreadful. I nearly gave up half way through but persevered until the end. The story was boring and the main character was a total oaf, Trying to be a Lord Peter Wimsey “don’t you know”. The narration was good but I really can’t think of anything else in a positive light.

Perfect listen

I enjoyed this book so much - the characters (guessing which ones might accompany the protagonist in future stories), the subtleties and small references to Scotland which I thought were clever (Jock Thamson). I was completely hooked. A special mention for the narrator - absolutely wonderful - a great choice. 10/10 say I!

Witty and well paced storytelling.

The narrative was engaging and fast paced and the plot integrated well with the eccentric characters and the time and place in which the story was set.
The reader was excellent and seemed to capture the spirit of the book. If there are more I will definitely purchase.

Narration of a twist and turn mystery

Took a while to build up but when it got going the twists and turns were brilliant!

A great story - well narrated

A great story with good appropriate narration.
I really enjoyed this listen - I’m a fan of the author having all his books and as I come from North Yorkshire the extra dimension added to the enjoyment - well worth the read!

Not your usual murder mystery

Really enjoyed this story which was fantastically narrated. It didn't turn out to be what I expected at all but ended up being a brilliant and exciting story overall!

Says I

I loved this book! I love stories that take place in quaint English villages! I also love it when the author uses proper English as the main character did. I thought this book was quite funny also, I found myself laughing throughout the entire book. I love historical fiction, especially with some espionage included. I really can’t say anything bad about this book. The Narration was excellent too!

Funny find…

This is a fun story. The humor is sparkling, almost as much as the wit. It’s been a long time since I came across a story with so much easy humor working ceaselessly in the background - uplifting and completely unforced. Now that is a rarity. In addition to being well-written, it is also narrated beautifully. Enjoyed every minute of it. One little caveat - it felt more like lessons in espionage rather than a narrative about an absorbing mystery. That said, it is absorbing in every way of its own.
