Story
In a near-deserted coastal village, odd things are happening. Strangers are asking questions about the town's recluse. A local hunter discovers naked footprints in the snow. The stray dog population has ceased to exist. And with winter's most powerful weapon bearing down, things are about to become much, much worse. A werewolf book. Not a romance. Not at all.

Summary
After a long day of prepping a house for painting, all Gus Berry wanted was the night off to spend some time with his girlfriend and relax before having to return to work the next morning. But that isn’t going to happen. Because Gus’s co-worker Benny has found a one-night job at the local Mollymart East, a job that has to be done by morning. If Gus and his paint crew can complete the work by then, it could mean huge business with a respected, established grocery store chain.
But as Gus and his fellow painters soon discover, the much-anticipated zombie apocalypse doesn’t start with a bang. It starts on a Monday. And barricading themselves inside a megastore isn’t the end.
It’s just the beginning.

Another Chance to Walk With the Mountain Man!
When I reached the end of the Mountain Man series it was a bittersweet moment. I'd reached the end of the story of one of the most real-feeling characters of this rather crowded genre. I'd walked with the Mountain Man and his companions through many adventures and like most I felt like I had a friend in Gus. For the most part he was just an ordinary guy doing his kind of best to cope with his world being torn apart and infested with zombies with all the horror that brings.
The slightly odd thing about the original series was that by the time we start with Gus the zombie apocalypse has done its worst and we meet a character who is already through the shock phase and is well into the longer term mental and physical effects of being one of the few survivors.
This new book gives us a chance to walk with Gus again. A slightly younger and less jaundiced Gus but still very much Gus! We get a healthy helping of great Gusisms and lots of Blackmore's trademark zombie horror and pointed dialogue. Gus treats us frequently to his own brand of the coarse male crudeness that we all love him for and naturally with the voice of RC Bray (who else?) bringing it to us all feels right in Gus's dystopian world.
It's a chance to walk with the Mountain Man once more and fill in some of the blanks from the original series. Thanks Mr Blackmore!

Where the hell is the special 6 star button?
This is what it's all about. This is Grade A, Top Shelf, Holy Grail, Diamond Encrusted, Baddest, of the Bad Ass Zombie Apocalypse stories ever. Damn i wish i could swear in this review!!
This is the Flipping, best Flipping, Zombie story i have ever Flipping listened to.
R. C. Bray at the helm, and holy sheet its an undead blast of epic proportions.
I've never heard dialogue, and story so utterly believable, and the terrifying pace is frantic, but absolutely hilarious in places.
This truly is perfection in my opinion.
The post apocalypse genre is swamp of total crap, with a few diamonds floating on the surface.
If you are looking for a hero who is an ex-Navy Seal \ Prepper \ Doctor \ al-round super human killer with good ole Christian values, then move along. You're in the wrong place.
No-one here can hot wire a car, or skin a baboon at 200 metres with just a toothbrush.
Gus is a normal, everyday guy, thrown in to the unimaginable.
Keith C. Blackmore is a true storyteller, and has created an absolute masterpiece.

Great Addition To The Series!
Any additional comments?
I loved the Mountain Man book series and this is certainly not a let down.
Once i had finished the original books i was guttered that it had finished so had to buy the prequel straight away. It is a great insight into life before the mountain man and how it all started going wrong for gus. The story line wasn't as great as the original but if your a fan, it really wont matter.
RC bray is also a phenomenal audio book narrator, top draw!

An interesting addition to the series
This prequel is better written than other novels in the series- not so many overblown and ridiculous metaphors and similes, for example. There is also much less crudity, and the story is better for it.
RC Bray's narration is excellent.
Of course, if you have read/listened to the rest of the series there is little real tension, (as this is a prequel!) It's still really enjoyable, but if you are new to the Mountain Man series, start here.
I enjoyed this very much; I just wish it had been longer!

Gus... Redefining the ‘Everyman!'
I thought I got to know what shaped Gus in the short story “The Hospital.” "The Mountain Man Prequel" provides information never before mentioned about his past. What a treat to learn about his pre-apocalypse job, friends and girlfriend. Each had a profound impact on his identity and how he looked at the world during that time. This information answers a lot of questions about why he (most likely) coped and developed as he did during the rest of the series.
Gus's self-deprecation is just so endearing, and love his what you see is what you get mentality... epitomizing the reluctant hero, who always mans-up when the chips are down. I would want him in my corner during an apocalypse, that is for sure.
The dry humor which came out of Gus's mouth was infectious. The type of guy that would be fun to hang out with, and loyal to a fault... Proving this in his selfless actions and the lengths he went to find his girlfriend,Tammy. Nuff said!
Much thanks to both Mr. Blackmore and Mr. Bray, for providing yet another (much appreciated) opportunity to venture back into one of my favorite places to visit... Gus’s world! Here's to hoping we have not heard the last from him. :- )

How awesome this series is and how awesome Gus is. Netflix, please make this into a series. I hope there is a second prequel between this one and book 1.. there seems to be room for one... about 1+ years worth before meeting Scott. I loved it... just when there was nothing out there I see this one and I couldn't be happier. RC Bray didn't skip a beat.. one of the best narrators out there.

Gus Berry begingings expertly told by RC Bray
Man, Keith C Blackmore did not disappoint with the prequel for the Mountain Man book series. RC Bray who is my absolute favorite narrator made Gus Berry come alive again. The Book has some laughs, chills, and terror all wrapped in one neat package. I would listen to the store while going on my early morning walks and more than once would look over my shoulder thinking a zombie was coming out between a house to come eat me.
Well Done Keith C. Blackmore and RC Bray! Bravo...Wish we could keep the Gus Berry stories going, but only if RC Bray keeps narrating the stories.

Thank you!!!
I loved the Mountain Man series, have listened to it a few times now. The story and narrator are great and it is easy to relate to Gus and the challenges he faces.
When I read online that there would be no more books in the Mountain Man series I was quite disappointed. Then I saw this book was released and I quickly bought it and listened to it in one day. it didn't let me down, it closed the loop on a lot of back stories and provided the zombie fighting action that I enjoy.
Thank you for writing this book! Please think about writing another Mountain Man book in the future.
