Story
After a long day of prepping a house for painting, all Gus Berry wanted was the night off to spend some time with his girlfriend and relax before having to return to work the next morning. But that isn’t going to happen. Because Gus’s co-worker Benny has found a one-night job at the local Mollymart East, a job that has to be done by morning. If Gus and his paint crew can complete the work by then, it could mean huge business with a respected, established grocery store chain.

In a near-deserted coastal village, odd things are happening. Strangers are asking questions about the town's recluse. A local hunter discovers naked footprints in the snow. The stray dog population has ceased to exist. And with winter's most powerful weapon bearing down, things are about to become much, much worse. A werewolf book. Not a romance. Not at all.

The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the Native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon came ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There went the good old days, when humans got killed only by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

Eh... Trying Too Hard to Shock Listener
- By Queen of Swords on 22-03-20
Summary
After the apocalypse, the world’s most valuable resource is the people that remain. And the knowledge and skills they possess.
On the island of Big Tancook, Collie Jones is making plans. She informs the islanders that it’s time to resume her original mission - to find other survivors, screen them, and return them to the island. Every survivor she brings back is one more valuable addition to the skill and gene pool.
But first, she must return to the place whence she came.
She must secure the elaborate government bunker called Whitecap and its vast stores of munitions within.
With a small group accompanying her - including Gus Berry, the Mountain Man - the islanders will once again return to the mainland and confront a new enemy.
An enemy who has the very same goal of locating survivors, but for a different purpose.
To build an empire.
Contains coarse language and violence.

Welcome Back Old Friend!
Ah of all the post apocalyptic characters you've ever wanted to spend more time with surely Gus, The Mountain Man has to be right up there among the very best. And he's back! But of course this isn't quite the same Gus that we first fell in love with, he's sober for a start. Who knew as those brilliant people at the AA set up their programs and their meetings that all you really needed to do was to survive a few years of a zombie apocalypse? That's as designed by Keith C Blackmore of course, ordinary zombie apocalypses need not apply! He's also a slightly more banged up Gus but the brilliant news is that while he has changed a bit he's still that flawed mound of human being that we've come to love. Being out walking, driving, running and falling over with The Mountain Man again has been a real highlight of my listening year so far. This book takes the series in a whole new direction, with added weirdness. Yes, I know a series that has brought us playpens full of gnashing heads and even that maternity ward nightmare has found new ways to be weird, you have been warned! Most of the time it's been very much about how the day to day is transformed with ordinary people in extreme situations but the series took on a gradually grander scale as the enemies became increasingly human. This one propels us even further along that line with more sci-fi elements tagging into it and after a reasonably Gus-paced opening the action starts coming thick and fast with a feeling more akin to something like the Arisen series than The Mountain Man by the end. But never fear there is plenty of that special brand of humanity that only Gus can bring and when he's teamed up with Collie Jones, a woman as scary as the apocalypse itself, his heart is just as much at risk as his miserable skin. Blackmore is a clever writer and while the story behind the apocalypse is explored a little more he finds ever new inventive ways to torture his long-suffering hero and drag at his heartstrings. You really are going to want to sit poor Gus down and pour some of the Captain's remedy down him on more than one occasion during this one. The performance, I really don't need to say anything other than it would have been a crime if Podium had chosen anyone else and I would have done a Collie Jones on them if they had! So, a bit different in character, a bit more Sci-fi in nature but it's still Gus and Blackmore is still throwing every kind of viscera at him that you can imagine with Gus actually ending up smellier than he has ever been before at times as hard as that is to believe. Just wonderful.

Another fantastic book from this series
I have loved all of this series. Even 5 books in there is no repetition or clichés. KCB is always a brilliant writer (I have read several of his now), and RCB is the best narrator I have heard, I can't imagine Gus with any voice except Bray's. If you like a zombie romp but with much more going on and plenty of humour then this series is for you.

Is this Mountain Man aka Gus or Mountain Woman Collie???? Just like the zombie apocalypse, Wokeness has taken over all media. Disappointing
This started as a good series but now is just a disappointment. The hereo is second fiddle now. An the crazy plot holes They start from the get go from shooting the guys with the slaves. Only they didn't know they had slaves or anything about them. So we are left with the idea our heroes were killing people for kicks. Crossbows that reach people using snipper rifles and on and on.

Going sound sexist but in a apocalyptic book where the book is based on zombies, manuel labor and shooting the men can't be punks while the female is the alpha. There no place for those type of men this is Sparta! Or wondering if a women likes you lol

FAN-FRACKING-TASTIC!!!!
Blackmore just opened up a whole new can of whoopass, expanded the Mountain man universe with this incredible story. RC Bray bright back old friends, and introduced us to New ones, and of course new ball-breaking bad guys, peppered with monsters. this series is my favorite in the genre, and podium audio is a top notch outfit, never disappoints me. Kieth is a genius at stringing words together and Bob brings it all to life, I can't recommend this series enough. at the end of this story, Bray asks the reader to visit them in social media, so come join the fan group 50 shades of Bray on Facebook, a group of fans who Geek out on all of these great stories in the Bray universe!!

Should have stopped at 4!
OK, I know everyone has their own likes and dislikes. I'm really not sure what it is about this one, but I really just did NOT like it! I went back and listened to the entire series again ... and I think I had my closure with the ending of Well Fed. I love Mr. Blackmore's writing ... I love RC's narration ... I love the Mountain Man series. I just did NOT care for this addition. Updated: 4-24-2020 -- OK ... minor update, but I'm not changing my rating. I've tried going back and re-listened to the entire series. I actually like this book up until The Leather was heavily involved. From this point on, I just did not care for the interaction.
