Summary
Meditation: It's not just a way to relax, or to deal with life's problems. Done correctly, it can be a way to radically encounter bliss and to begin - and sustain - real transformation in ourselves.
In Mindfulness, Bliss, and Beyond, self-described meditation junkie Ajahn Brahm shares his knowledge and experience of the jhanas - a core part of the Buddha's original meditation teaching. Never before has this material been approached in such an empowering way, by a teacher of such authority and popularity.
Full of surprises, delightfully goofy humor, and entertaining stories that inspire, instruct, and illuminate, Mindfulness, Bliss, and Beyond will encourage those new to meditation, and give a shot in the arm to more experienced practitioners as well.

I'm a serious beginner mediator, I've spent the last month or two blocked. This book has just been so very helpful with so much I need to work on. I have read literally about 100 dharma books, there are a huge amount of good and very good ones but this is among the very best. if you only listen to a few I strongly recommend this and a trilogy called "Abiding in Mindfulness" by Joseph Goldstein. Also Ajahn Chas "Food for the Heart". seriously, try listening to these, they likely will change your life. Metta!

excellent guide to meditation
A meditation guide that explores the profoudness of the jhanas in a clear way. More than a generic meditation guide that discusses the 5 hinderances, it also discusses the 5 jhana factors and the path that leads to jhana. meditation is a journey that needs to be traversed. This book does a great job presenting the sign posts and markers of meditative achievement; as reflected within the Theravadin tradition. Overall, this is an excellent book I would recommend to anyone looking to understand the path to realizing jhana in their own life; and ultimately, moving towards liberation and parinirvana.

Review for serious students and teachers
The author summorizes insight from his readings.
Clearly he has read deeply into the middle way literature. He presents as though he were experiencing, or has experienced what he has read about.
Instead, I would suggest that this is an academic novel of meditative experience.
Working teachers see this phenomenon where a student embraces the fancy of meditation, but doesn't put in the time meditating. This is that.
As a result, while it may encourage a student initially, it doesn't explain how exactly to meditate, or what exactly to expect. It's like someone who never tasted peanut butter, but read all about it wrote a book of poetry about the amazing taste of peanut butter.
Please read "The Mind Illuminated" or "The Science of Enlightenment" available here on Audible by searching those titles. These were written by teachers who put in the work.
In addition to the above there is a library of excellent explanations of meditation, including tutorials, among the various writings of the Dali Lama also available here on Audible. They are harder to filter through as they are so varied and aren't always titled in an intuitive manner.
Bless this author for any he has helped to become interested.
