Summary

The first stunning thriller in the Tony Hill and Carol Jordan series, from best-selling author Val McDermid.

Up until now, the only serial killers Tony Hill had encountered were safely behind bars. This one’s different – this one’s on the loose.

Four men have been found mutilated and tortured. As fear grips the city, the police turn to clinical psychologist Tony Hill for a profile of the killer. But soon Tony becomes the unsuspecting target in a battle of wits and wills where he has to use every ounce of his professional nerve to survive.

A tense, beautifully written psychological thriller, The Mermaids Singing explores the tormented mind of a serial killer unlike any the world of fiction has ever seen.

Annoying narrator

The story is fantastic but the narrator does awful accents and his female voices are terrible-comedy accents-which made this an annoying listen

Not for the weak hearted !

Good read , especially if you like quite gruesome descriptions .
Story line was strong too , narration was slightly distracting for me , as Saul Reichlin narrated all the “girl with the dragon tattoo “ series but that’s only a personal point of view .

Superb!

Characters described in intricate detail, locations portrayed well, gripping story with a twist in the outcome.

Engaging, but nothing new

Some aspects felt a little clichéd, and occasionally appeared the desire to shock trumped the desire to tell a story. But if you watch Silent Witness, this could be up your street

Story good - narration not so.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Probably not - while the story was reasonably good I felt the narration was poor. That said I would consider the author again

What other book might you compare Mermaids Singing to, and why?

I couldn't it seemed to me to be in a gendre all of its own and to a degree outside of my normal choices.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Saul Reichlin?

I doubt it very much

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Moved no, surprised yes

Any additional comments?

Difficult to comment on this book without revealing too much of the story

Gripping

Have enjoyed this series but definitely feel it has improved with time & the later books are less dependent on the shock effect. Good characters that the listener wants to return to.

Tony!!

I enjoyed The Mermaids Singing! There is depth to it, but not so much you can't enjoy it.
I would listen to virtually anything read by Saul Reichlin, but how much better to hear him read a good book!
Listened to a second time, I enjoyed it even more. So it would now be:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. ⭐️⭐️🌟⭐️🌟

great story, awful narrator

it's such a shame but the narrator was just shockingly bad with accents and it sort of spoiled the experience of listening to the audiobook despite it being a great story.

Narrator Spoiled The Overall Experience

Good story, I always enjoy Val McDermid BUT the narrator has spoiled this one for me. Although he was enthusiastic, his voices and accents were laughable, especially the 'sexy' female voice he does.
