About this listen

Invictus is a gripping, authentic and exciting audiobook of the Roman army from best-selling author Simon Scarrow. Not to be missed by fans of Conn Iggulden and Bernard Cornwell.

It is AD 54. The soldiers of the Roman army patrol a growing empire from the Mediterranean to the North Sea, from the Atlantic to the banks of the Nile. Rome brutally enforces its rule, and its legions are the most efficient and aggressive fighting force in the world. Two battle-scarred veterans of this army, Prefect Cato and Centurion Macro, have survived years of campaigning in Britannia and have been recalled to Rome.

Their time in the teeming, dangerously political city is short, and soon they are travelling with the Praetorian Guard to Spain, a restless colony where simmering tension in the face of Roman rule is aggravated by bitter rivalry amongst the natives. The challenges that face two old friends and their comrades in arms are unlike any they have seen before - in a land that declares itself unconquerable.

"I really don't need this kind of competition." (Bernard Cornwell)

Having completed three books dragging our heroes through the snow, rain and ice of our own British Isles Scarrow returns them to sunnier climes. But there's no warm reception for them in Rome and this author seems intent on tearing poor Cato apart piece by bloody piece. He gets a battering in almost every imaginable way in this one and there are signs of a newer Cato emerging as a result. Possibly even one we won't actually like quite so much . . . Macro on the other hand is as redoubtable and unbending as ever.

I thought that after the fabulous mini-series of three books in Britannia that this one might be a little bit of a breather in some ways but no our two heroes are beset on all sides and come up against an old adversary or two from their earlier days. Most of these books can be taken stand-alone but for reasons like this taking them in order adds significantly to the experience.

Simply put, another fine episode in a fabulous series brought to life by one of the best narrators in the business ending with a great setup for the next book.

Cato- How much more can one man take?

if you've read my reviews of other books by Simon scarrow you will see I am a huge fan and all of the eagle series are 5* ,but the treatment of our hero in the first few chapters is unkind. nevertheless the story is great and another great read. my first read of this one as I've read all the others at least twice. next please......

poor cato

Another really gripping Cato and Macro tale this time set in Spain. All sorts of machinations and hand-to'-hand fighting as well as the enduring comradeship of the two 'heroes'. Easy, exciting story of derring-do. I really enjoyed it.

Another great Cato and Macro story

Simon continues to deliver great storylines. I only have six books to go so my hope is Macro & Cato catch a few breaks in the next few listens.

Another great listen
