About this listen

Read by Stephen Fry.

The intergalactic adventures of Arthur Dent begin in the first volume of the 'trilogy of five', Douglas Adams' comedy sci-fi classic
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

'One of the greatest achievements in comedy. A work of staggering genius' - David Walliams

'By turns authoritative as the narrator, bemused as Arthur Dent, deadpan as Ford Prefect and manic as Zaphod Beeblebrox, he [Stephen Fry] makes an altogether appropriate reader' -
The Times

'Master of comedy Stephen Fry delivers a brilliant audiobook narration' - Editor Review

On 12 October 1979 the most remarkable book ever to come out of the great publishing corporations of Ursa Minor (and Earth) was made available to humanity – The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

It's an ordinary Thursday lunchtime for Arthur Dent until his house gets demolished. The Earth follows shortly afterwards to make way for a new hyperspace bypass and his best friend has just announced that he's an alien. At this moment, they're hurtling through space with nothing but their towels and an innocuous-looking book inscribed with the big, friendly words: DON'T PANIC.

The weekend has only just begun . . .

Follow Arthur Dent's galactic (mis)adventures in the rest of the trilogy with five parts: The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life, the Universe and Everything, So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish, and Mostly Harmless.

What did you like most about Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?

It's hard to find something new to say about this story. It's been wonderful every time it's been told. And Stephen Fry is the perfect narrator.

If you like your humour surreal, mad, and unobviously obvious, then you will like this book. This version is read by Stephen Fry, who spent a lot of time with Adams sharing their Apple Geekery before the word 'Fanboy' had ever been applied to Apple Disciples. I always prefer actors reading books as they always seem to give it a bit more gusto, and this certainly applies to Stephen Fry here. Overall a very good book read very well. Although I did feel it was a bit short. Just have to find the Restaurant At The End Of The Universe now, I guess.

Brilliantly Off the wall book, excellently read

If you could sum up Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in three words, what would they be?

Funny Quirky Weird

Who was your favorite character and why?

Marvin
Mainly because i find myself grumbling about similar things to him in my own life.... I'm worried this might be a bad thing!

What does Stephen Fry bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He clearly understands the kind of humour in this book and reads it perfectly making listening to it even more enjoyable.

Any additional comments?

This book is a funny story from a very VERY imaginative mind. A very pleasant and amusing way to spend a few hours

A Timeless Classic

I don’t think anyone can beat Stephen Fry when it comes to narration, and he made this audiobook such a joy to listen to! The story itself was so fun and ridiculous, I can’t wait to see what else the series has in store

Wonderfully narrated
