About this listen

A much loved science-fiction classic, this entertaining intergalactic adventure has a lot going for it - including narration by British comedian Stephen Fry. Adams displays his talents for a creating a whole new world in this first of five audiobooks in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. Packed with brilliant humour, extraordinary characters and a highly original storyline, it's no wonder that this novel is a favourite of so many.

One Thursday lunchtime the Earth gets unexpectedly demolished to make way for a new hyperspace bypass. For Arthur Dent, who has only just had his house demolished that morning, this seems already to be more than he can cope with. Sadly, however, the weekend has only just begun, and the Galaxy is a very strange and startling place.

Editor reviews

Master of comedy Stephen Fry delivers a brilliant audiobook narration of the best-selling novel The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, written by Douglas Adams. Arthur Dent is a very British man having a very bad day. He discovers his friend is an alien and he’s taken off earth just as it’s destroyed to make way for a galaxy highway. To make matters worse, he hasn’t even had his morning cup of tea yet. This ingeniously constructed story takes a humorous look at how something as precious as Earth isn’t always appreciated until it’s gone. A lighthearted and enjoyable listen. Available now from Audible.

Critic reviews

'One of the greatest achievements in comedy. A work of staggering genius' - David Walliams

'By turns authoritative as the narrator, bemused as Arthur Dent, deadpan as Ford Prefect and manic as Zaphod Beeblebrox, he [Stephen Fry] makes an altogether appropriate reader' - The Times

'Master of comedy Stephen Fry delivers a brilliant audiobook narration' - Editor Review

'He had almost a Wodehousian style and some of his phrases and jokes entered our language. He changed the way people spoke' - Stephen Fry

British humour at its best. This work has inspired countless later stories, and changed our collective perspective on sci-fi genre. Its deadpan comedy, together with improbable shenanigans are forever iconic. The plot twist of "the least likely thing to happen actually happening" gets a bit predictable towards the end of the book, but it doesn't take away from the experience. Definitely recommend!

Great comedy

So good to hear the one person I think could do justice to Douglas Adams legacy of the trilogy…in five books! Kudos Mr Fry👏👏

It took a long ass time to get to Hitchhiker and, like with others, I finally did as a way to encourage my teenage son to fall into love with the series. It may just have worked - for both of us. Wonderful metaphors, read with predictable dexterity by Stephen Fry this book is whacky and unpredictable and stupid fun. Brilliantly colourful characters, epic worlds, but all within easy grasp. Loved it. Loved the silliness, the timelessness (it came about in 78!), the otherworldlyness of it all. Makes life seem so arbitrary, yet still magnificent, which is what it is, in many ways, no? Another resounding yes!

So imaginative, timeless and out there

I have always loved this book, and Stephen Fry’s narration is fantastic and captures the spirit of Douglas Adams’ writing.

A classic

Ok, I will admit it I saw the movie first but I love the book so much more. The possibilities and the characters are so much more vibrant in the book. I can't wait to see how the story grows and the secrets that have yet to be revealed.

Stephen Fry really brings the story to life and gives it the English twist that the character of Arther Dent really needs to become the typical annoyed British. A classic that everyone should listen to at least once.
