A Good Story
- By Melissa Bailey on 14-04-19
Summary
When American Lexi Maxwell buys a derelict mansion in a quaint English village and sets about turning it into a manor-house hotel, it’s a dream come true. But events take a turn for the bizarre, as a heartbroken ghost makes a nightly appearance and kneels beneath a tree next to a centuries-old ruin, and people in the village keep commenting on Lexi’s resemblance to a woman who’s been dead for a quarter of a century.
As Lexi tries to find out more about the man in the ruin, she unexpectedly stumbles upon secrets from her own past - secrets that threaten to destroy everything she’s come to believe and hold dear. As Lexi struggles to put the pieces of the puzzle together, she’s drawn deeper into the mystery and can only rely on the man she’s come to have deep feelings for - a man who’s battling his own demons.

Engaging dual time novel
1650: England has been decimated by Civil War. Charles l has been executed and Oliver Cromwell is relentless in the slaughter of those who stand in the way of his Commonwealth. Tired of the killing, a disillusioned Brendan Carr, deserts his post and heads for home. His homecoming is marred by the discovery that his father is dead, his sister widowed and he has been disinherited. His vindictive brother Jasper, now lord of the estate, refuses to shelter him lest the Roundheads come for him.
Brendan decides to leave and take refuge with his mother’s kin. Not satisfied with usurping Brendan’s inheritance, Jasper sends men to kill Brendan before he reaches his destination. Brendan survives the attack but is seriously wounded. Sheltered by a priest, Brendan is nursed back to health by his Aunt’s niece Rowan. With Cromwell’s men scouring the country for him for desertion as well as his malicious brother, does Brendan stand any chance of happiness?
Present Day: Following the death of her father, Lexie Maxwell fulfils a lifelong dream to move to England. Purchasing a derelict mansion in a quaint English village with the intention of turning it into a manor-house hotel, Lexie is intrigued by the rumoured ghost which supposedly haunts the ruins accompanying the mansion. As Lexie tries to find out more about the man in the ruin, she unexpectedly stumbles across secrets from her own past that threatens all that she holds dear.
Haunted Ground is a stand alone dual time novel set in the 17th century during Cromwell’s Reign of Terror. The author has a wonderful knack for transporting her readers to the past and this book was no exception. I found myself completely immersed from the tragic prologue to the satisfying epilogue where at least one villain got his comeuppance. The characters were well defined and relatable. I was impressed with the stunning vivid imagery depicted by the author which made me feel that I was there seeing the sights and sounds.
All in all this was a well crafted suspenseful novel which will appeal to fans of historical fiction, with a touch of paranormal and a Scotsman to boot - what’s not to like?
I received an advanced free audible copy of Haunted Ground and I am voluntarily reviewing it. I was impressed by Joanne Long’s smooth and concise narration. Her excellent pacing had me getting lost in her recitation without ever noticing the time.

Good story line ....awful narrative.
The story is good it’s entertaining ,but the narrator was dreadful her English and Scottish accents were like Dick Van Dyke’s cockney accent in Mary Poppins which was just dreadful.
Also she was unable to apply variety to the characters they all sounded the same wether they were set in present day uk or 17th century rural England.

Haunted Ground
Lexi is drawn to a town in England and a Manor house she keeps dreaming of. Her parents try to discourage her from finding it but she pushes on. Lexi finally finds the home and purchases it to start her new hotel. During the renovations she starts seeing a ghost and a tomb is found in a hidden part of the basement. Lexi must find out more about these things but no one in town wants to talk. Joanne Long does a nice job on the narration.

Fascinating story, though sad and great narration.
This was a fascinating story that follows two couples, really. In the story taking place in the past, we meet Brendan who is ultimately betrayed by his own brother. Along the way, he finds love but, without giving anything away, this is a sad story. In the present, a woman, Lexi, purchases a home that she wants to convert to a hotel and she sees a ghost. She and her contractor try to get the to bottom of certain mysteries and finds that her present and the mansion's past are intertwined. Overall, this is a story of hope and forgiveness. There were a few difficult scenes with violence and heartbreak but definitely worth the journey to get to a happy ending (sort of). It felt a little long, with a lot of characters so ultimately there were times I felt a bit lost.
i received the audiobook for free for an honest review. I have to say that I really liked the narrator. She did a great job differentiating the different characters and adopting different accents. Admittedly, I did get a little confused with the timelines but this happens especially when multitasking while listening! It helped that I also borrowed the book via KU so I was able to read some parts along with listening to the audio!

Enjoyable Gothic Romance
I enjoyed this Gothic romance. The story is solid, if somewhat predictable, the kind of predicatable lovers of Gothics appreciate. The main character was well developed and likable. The narrator’s voice is pleasant though her Scottish and English dialects need work. The accents didn’t spoil the audiobook for me, but they were distracting and shook me out of the story from time to time. All in all, this was a nice listen, and I look forward to more by this author.

Two stories in one
Lexi buys a house and begins to unravel its history and the history of the people it belonged to. This book was not scary. It was more of a love story in two different centuries, with some haunted elements. I am not a fan of period pieces but I loved the backstory in this book. It has been along time since a book moved me so much that I actually teared up. It was very well written and exceptionally performed.
I received this book at no charge. My review is my own and was not required.
