About this listen

Tristram Abberley was an acclaimed English poet of the 1930s whose legendary reputation was sealed when he died fighting for the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War. Nearly 50 years later, his sister Beatrix is brutally murdered in her seaside cottage.

Her family are stunned by the crime - especially Beatrix's niece, Charlotte Ladram. But Charlotte has little time to mourn her aunt as 50 years of secrets begin to unravel. Beatrix is the victim of a dark conspiracy, one that her loved ones are powerless to defeat.

A harrowing quest for answers begins, one that uncovers a shocking tale of wartime greed and treachery and a vendetta seemingly without end.....

I first thought, at nearly 17 hours in length, that this was going to be overly long. As it turned out, I was sad when it ended, it's such a good story, expertly read by John Telfer, who manages to keep the individual characters completely separate by the clever use of different voices. I don't think I've heard a better example of this technique, and I've listened to over 300 Audible titles now. Well done Robert Goddard and John Telfer, an amazing combination.

Excellent story, expertly narrated

Very good plot but slow and ponderous. I struggled to finish but wanted to finish it although it would have been much more enjoyable with 15% fewer pages

I found this story rather difficult to follow, it seemed to go all over the place. There wasn’t one person that stood out, not as good as all the other Robert Goddard. That I have read.

I enjoyed this novel mostly for the wonderful reading by John Tefler. What an amazingly versatile actor, what a range of accents! Even women’s voices were passable, the French and the Welsh accents absolutely spot on, Spanish slightly less so, much great effort.

The story is classic Goddard, complex, somewhat convoluted, but still a good yarn. There are bad guys and good guys and not much in between.
My one small quibble with the story is that much of it is being “explained” through dialogue. Dialogue is great when there is conflict in the here and now between two or more person, but when the story is told through “telling” rather than showing, it loses out. For the same reason it feels lacking in setting. As a reader I want to imagine myself in the setting where the action takes place. A little help with this from the author would make the novel more real and believable.

Classic Goddard
