Summary

Descension is the fifth book in the best-selling Psychic Surveys series, featuring plot twists, compelling characters, and a mystery at its dark heart!

This is what we're dealing with here: the institutionalized.

Brookbridge housing estate has long been a source of work for Psychic Surveys. Formerly the site of a notorious mental hospital, Ruby and her team have had to deal with spirits manifesting in people’s homes, still trapped in the cold grey walls of the asylum they once inhabited. There have been plenty of traumatic cases but never a mass case – until now.

The last remaining hospital block is due to be pulled down. It is a building teeming with spirits of the most resistant kind - the institutionalized. With the help of a newfound friend, as well as Cash and her colleagues, Ruby attempts to tackle this mammoth task. At the same time, her private life is demanding attention, unravelling in ways she could never imagine.

She's about to delve deep into madness. Will she ever find her way back?

Another great story

I have loved all the psychic survey books but they are getting better and better. All the characters are growing and coming into their own, Jed is my favourite and I hope that somehow Cash will one day be able to see him with his own eyes, that would be amazing.

Narration too distracting

I love Shani Struthers, can't get enough of her books. But really ... this narrator? The lady cannot say the letter "R", and our main character's name is Ruby, who deals with spirits. So we have "Wuby" and the "spiwits" - sounding very Monty Python, and I find it hard to take the story seriously.

My next read was going to be Comraich which is a sequel to Jessamine - read in the beautiful Scottish lilt of Toni Frutin and set in Scotland. However I now find that Sheila Dearden has narrated this too so I will be giving the Audible version a miss. I don't think I can cope with hearing "Comwaich" over and over again!

Her diction and emphases are all wrong too. She puts emphasis on the wrong word in a sentence, giving it a whole different meaning. Then I find myself correcting it in my head which detracts from listening to the story.

Please get a better narrator to do Shani's work justice.
