This time, you mostly follow Celine and Oliver—their arcs are compelling and emotionally rich.
Will's storyline is shorter, but fun as well.
The book does an excellent job of setting the stage for what promises to be an epic series, and I’m excited to see what comes next.

In WoT Rand is a little crazy, in DBZ Goku is never there for the fight and has to spend 10 episodes running towards it, and in Jujutsu Kaisen we have Gojo being sealed because of a human flaw, not a failing of his powers. I think the solution in this book, takes some good steps with a bit of guidance from its fantasy predecessors, while remaining its own thing.
Wisely, to keep the story engaging, this book keeps expanding the POV roster. Although Will is my favourite, he is less prominent in this book than the previous. This is justified both from a meta-narrative point of view and in-world logic. But the other POV’s are very fascinating as different mentalities and skill sets are explored.
A thing I really enjoy in this series is the commitment to the world, its options, and the intelligence of the characters. Often in fantasy, you see authors have a “ta-da” solution to a problem (a time-turner for example), but then in the next instalment that device would trivialise the plot - so instead they go “umm, no actually they are gone now, so yeah”.
They don’t do this here. Early in the series we are introduced to regeneration potion and later teleportation - two things that have the potential to undercut meaningful dramatic tension. But instead of pretending that it didn’t happen - the world and the characters engages with it.
The characters are well prepared and resourceful and are therefore able to overcome ever increasing challenges. Instead of lowering the capacity of the characters we up the problems they face in a meaningful way.
God damn these books are great - and I will fight people who say otherwise (for legal reasons that is (mostly) a joke).
