Summary

Legends speak of wizards with the power to rival Gods....

To Hump, it’s just a story. Apprenticed to a wandering wizard, he grew up on the road, following the coin on whatever quest it took them. He always believed his master was just an ordinary hedge wizard, until the old man suddenly died, and his book of spells bound to Hump’s soul.

Knowing no other life, Hump takes up his master’s staff and heads out alone into a world of dungeons and monsters. Scorned by the gods, wizards can trust only their own wit and skill to survive.

Lacking the godly gifts and grand ideals of the Chosen few, Hump fights for something else. If he wants to eat, he needs to work. And with a new Dungeon opening in Bledsbury, where better for a young hedge wizard to earn some coin?

So begins the path of The Wanderer. The White Flame. The Hedge Wizard.

Experience the start of a Progression Fantasy LitRPG Series about a working-class wizard out to forge his own path and prove that one does not have to be Chosen to do great deeds.

About the Series: Multiple magic systems, spells stolen from the gods, and an undefined path of progression, The Hedge Wizard brings a realism-focused spin to GameLit/LitRPG. Explore a world of long forgotten legends, where the Gods now reign and monsters roam.

Not for me

Admittedly I only made it half way through...

Firstly where are the LitRPG elements? I don't see any at all.
Secondly it moves at a slowish pace or at least feels that way. The parts that are supposed to be exciting just aren't.
There are literally a billion of these types of stories out there and this one feels less than mediocre.

Very mediocre

For being what's suppose to be a very low tier mage with no real uniqueness, our MC sure as hell can cast WAY WAY past what is suppose to be his established limit, simply by taking a few breaths.

They keep hammering about how little energy he has, only to keep casting spells over and over and over again. It just feels dragged out an simply there to pad the reading time.

I can't personally not recommend this, since the powers explained makes little to no sense with what is being done.

Almost didn't read it!

Didn't know the author, the cover and the LitRPG nearly put me off but I like the narrator so gave it a go, I'm glad I did.
Good story with plenty of action and well paced, the MC is a young smart ass but mature for his age, not naive and wide-eyed like some books. The narrator did an excellent job bringing the character alive, I really hope there's more.

Fun & action packed

An enjoyable listen, though there’s perhaps a little too much action with somewhat repetitive battle scenes, the characters, relationships and humour carry the story nicely and there’s a fairly good progression throughout, brought to life by Tim Gerard Reynolds fantastic narration.
Im looking forward to listening to the second book in the series.

Long Live Swords & Sourcery!

The Hedge Wizard, by Alex Maher, is the first book in a series by the same title. Although advertised as Progression RPGLit, it certainly doesn’t ram it down the readers throat. Actually, calling it that reduces the value of a good solid fantasy quest adventure. The author gives us a lot of action and even gets in some humour. The only drawback, hopefully corrected as the series progresses, is the characters are pretty shallow and the reader is left wondering how their backgrounds have gotten them to this point. Much of our sword and sourcery fantasies are, by nature, somewhat formulaic in the plot and/or story arc but Maher has thrown in some spice keeping it pretty fresh. The audiobook performance raises the overall level of the novel, making this, in this reader’s opinion, more enjoyable than some other books.

Worth the purchase

I just finished the third book so thought I'd come back and give my thoughts thus far.

Overall, if you're looking for some entertaining, easy listening this is an easy recommendation. Alex also seems to be putting these books out at a pretty decent pace too, which is always a bonus.

Definitely worth picking up if you're into epic/progression fantasy.

It’s was good but sadly not great

Overall enjoyable story, wasn’t entirely convinced on the main progression of the character and he is a little ‘immature’ which partly puts me off.

2/3 way through now finished

I have been really enjoying the book along with the brilliant narration. Then the story got repetitive, battle, wizard fire, tired, enemy killed in various ways blah blah blah. I am starting to skip through the book hoping I don’t miss any of the story. Hopefully there is a conclusion rather than a hold for the next book. Maybe Shirtaloon has spoilt me by setting my expectations too high. I will update this when I finish the book.

Got to the end - yay, though I did skip more fighting. I enjoyed the book overall and considering going to book 2.
