Publisher's Summary

The name's Daniels, Jack Daniels - just like the whiskey you know. I'm a private detective. And I can't help butting my nose into other people's business. It's what I do. You get used to it. It becomes a way of life almost. After a while it comes natural to you, automatic, like breathing, or eating, although not quite as enjoyable. It's a habit that I just can't break. I just can't help it.

But sometimes it can lead you into trouble....

"Didn't your mother ever warn you...?"

This is one of those audiobooks where the melding of narrator and text is so seamless that it feels like the actual character is sitting across a bar table telling the listener his story. So well written, Jack Daniels, private detective, is alive, a bit careworn perhaps, but solid and real. He mostly investigates possible infidelities, 'spying' to garner evidence for a client's divorce. But he's also a bit of a reluctant good Samaritan, with a penchant for a pretty face. So when he sees a young woman in distress, he steps in to help.
Told as a somewhat self depreciating monologue, which at times slightly rambles off into other directions only to be pulled back again to the main story, all expertly performed by a soft spoken, world weary Joe Voegler, this short (under two hours) book nevertheless captures everything, time, place and, of course, Jack Daniels himself. No great peaks of excitement but instead emerges a simple tale of murder and deception which holds the listener throughout.

I had requested this book and was very.fortunate in being freely gifted a complementary copy by the rights holder, via Audiobook Boom. Thank you so much. It is a little gem and recommended to anyone who enjoys good detective Noire stories, with full characterisation at the forefront, complimented by a superb narration.

    "Cleverly done"

The narrator did a great job with this book, the character voices are believable and the delivery is natural and smooth.

The story was quite clever, it kept me guessing and when the reveal happened I had not been expecting the outcome. Well written with intriguing characters, this book was an enjoyable read.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.

"Narrator is very hard to understand!"

Jack Daniels, PI, is snarky and smart. I love the compassion he shows to others. This is a short, easy listen.

I had a difficult time understanding the narrator. He mumbles, runs his words together, and it sounds like he's sucking on a cough drop. I turned my player down to 0.75 speed so I could understand him.

I received this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

    "Narration put me off"

I found the narration by Joe Voegler hard to listen to. Thank goodness this was a novella so not very long. I have listened to book 3 in this series and the narrator was a different reader and much better. As for the story line I was okay but I had a hard time getting into it because of the reader. I was gifted this audio book with the understanding that I would leave an honest review.

    "Stellar narration"

Let me first give major kudos to the narrator. Voegler is phenomenal in his performance of this title. Phenomenal. This listen is a compilation of everything we love about detective novels and Voegler created the absolute best character in Jack Daniels.

Jack Daniels is a bit on the grumpy side but he's one of the good ones. He stumbles into this mystery with his white hat on and trouble ensues. Check this listen out for the story (it's a good one) but stay for the narration (it's even better.)

    "OK"

I’m glad I listened to it rather than reading it as I might have stopped as a little boring. It was a quick listen about a PI Jack Daniels who was almost duped by woman Linda. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you

    "fun and witty PI story"

If you want a quick listen and want to enjoy a good PI book, take a listen to "The Candy Man". It is fun and cleverly written in the first person, which made for a great listen.

I liked how the narrator, Joe Voegler, held you captive by bringing each of the characters to life, especially the main character Jack Daniels!

    "A Good Detective Short Story"

The Candy Man was a fun listen. It's a noir-ish detective story based on the character Jack Daniels. His character is full-bodied and the story is solid although short. I enjoyed it. Good writing by John holt.

Joe Voegler's voice was great for Jack Daniels. He had a lot of characterization and voice inflections. He sounded like the real deal.

An overall good combination with story and reader.
