Publisher's Summary

Most people ignored the outrageous reports on the news. But they became too frequent, they became too real. And soon, they began happening down the street. Then the Internet died. The television and radio went silent. The phones stopped ringing. And we couldn't look outside anymore.

Malorie raises the children the only way she can; indoors. The house is quiet. The doors are locked, the curtains are closed, mattresses are nailed over the windows. They are out there. She might let them in. The children sleep in the bedroom across the hall. Soon she will have to wake them. Soon she will have to blindfold them. Today they must leave the house. Today they will risk everything.

What the Critics Say

"A book that demands to be read in a single sitting, and through the cracks between one's fingers. There has never been a horror story quite like this. Josh Malerman truly delivers" (Hugh Howey bestselling author of )

    "Disappointing in so many ways"

Didn't enjoy this at all. The narration was fine but the story was full of holes. The premise was promising enough - some sort of "phenomenon" that seems to devastate the whole world - but the author never really gets into what or why. I got the feeling that he just didn't have the answer so just avoided it. Plenty of speculation from the various characters, but I would have liked more depth on what actually happened and how the human race could prevail. I didn't feel any sense of dread and didn't care what happened to any of the characters. I mostly left waiting for ANYTHING to happen to move the story along. It wasn't horror, it wasn't scary, it wasn't creepy and the ending was just frustrating.

    "I am totally gripped!"

What a great horror/psychological suspense novel.

It is a chilling story! As the world as we know it falls prey to an apocalyptic plague of suicidal, murderous behaviour triggered by glimpsing an unknown creature, Malorie must do all she can to survive. DO NOT OPEN YOUR EYES!

I have half an hour left until the end of the book and I don't want it to end! It is so gripping and will have you on the edge of your seat with anxiety for the characters involved.

    "Not for me, nothing happened"

I wasn’t a fan of the narrator, she had a lovely time to her voice but as it only changed for shouting/shrieking moments it got a bit monotonous. And her voice for all the men’s parts wasn’t the best.

I’d been told good things of his story, and it may be better read than listened to bearing in mind the above, but I found it slightly boring to tell the truth. You can’t imagine what they are going through, but apart from that there was little to care about really. I may be being slightly cynical there, but as most of the story is in the past you can guess most of what happens... and the narrative in the present doesn’t really have much to it regards drama.

Shame though, great idea and could’ve been more suspenseful I guess if I’d read it.

i really loved this book, it constantly kept me guessing and heating the struggles of the main protagonists journey was quite emotional at times

    "It doesn't work"
What would have made Bird Box better?

It has been stated in the past that one should just read a book and not over-analyze but for me that's just letting the author get away with murder and so I'll review this book warts and all though that could take some time. Research would have made this book better.

What could Josh Malerman have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

As I've adid, he could have researched it better.

How could the performance have been better?

The narator could have sounded as if she actually wanted to read it. Instead there was no expression and no cadance to her performance.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Well yes it did. it had an ending. Even the worst book has to stop somehwere.

    Any additional comments?

Oh plenty. For one thing the plot is good but it doesn't work. You have a frightened mother needing to leave the house after living there for four years. She doesn't even have proper names for ehr children. They are simply 'boy' and 'girl' which are not real names and yet she herself has a name. The plot is one of those plots that talks about an ending of the world as we know it kind of novels. Now, it's simple. Nobody just 'says' anything. We all talk with feeling. We might 'ask' or 'retort' or 'enquire' or any number of things. In other words the body language of speech which in this book is ignored almost completely and yet the author by the same token is keen to tell us all about what the people in the house wore and their facial expressions which means he wants to let us know all the fisual things which in this world of necessary darkness don't matter. yet hardly ever does anyone speak with feeling apparently but ratehr in a bland monotone sinc3e that's what the word 'says' is, isn't it? Bland and communicating nothing of mood or feeling at the time. They all do it and it's pathetic in my opinion which is all I can state. Now for the plot itself. It's got more flaws than a tower block if you'll pardon the contradiction of spelling. For one thing, at no point is it thought necessary for the housemates to possibly put out feelers if you'll excuse the pun, for blind people used to working in the dark but instead they struggle along all by themselves with blindfolds on just in case they see that which causes them to commit suicide or kill somebody else. They don't know what effect this thing has on animals yet they have a dog which surely has to go outside simetimes or do they blindfold the dog? They bring in other animals which apparently managed to survive for months on end without fresh water or a replenished food supply. How's that work then? Then there's a motor boat on the river which for four years hasn't run you'd think uet the petrol hasn't turned to sludge and there's no explanation as to how its owner got fuel for it. Then the dock is not choked with weeds and rotting wood. there are other flaws but too many to mention here. The narator sounds bored most of the time and who can blame her? I'd only recommend reading this book if you've nothing else better to do and you've been drinking so then you might not notice so much what's wrong with it.

    "Very good and exciting"

This was my first audio book which I have listened to and it was very good. Very easy to understand and clear what is happening. It gripped me from the start right to the end. There were parts which seemed to be a pointless to the overall story but generally very good. The narrator was generally ok, she sounded a bit robotic a times but clear enough to understand.

You don't 'see' anything except people going mad and killing themselves and each other. Blindness is terror, helplessness and protection all in one

    "Gripping and unusual!"
Where does Bird Box rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the best! I found myself completely caught up in it. Excellently written, perfectly performed and a very good and quite terrifying story.

What other book might you compare Bird Box to, and why?

Touch of The Birds, touch of The Walking Dead - but this apocalyptic story wasn't really like either of them, it just made me think of them in certain ways.

What about Katharine Mangold’s performance did you like?

Some reviewers have criticized Katherine Mangold's performance and this actually made me hesitate before buying it. But I'm SO glad i did buy it because it's a wonderful and powerful book and I found her reading of it to be exactly right. It suits the story, the situation and the characters. Her reading isn't flat and dull, it's measured and fitting for the woman who is the main character. She became Mallory in my mind. And where excitement and tension were required, she put it in her reading. Well done, Katherine!

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

It would have to be "Don't open your eyes".

    Any additional comments?

Only - buy this!! It starts off slowly but soon it's totally gripping and involving. Terrifying in a subtle and insidious way, and quite different probably, than what you'd expect. And I actually had a tear in my eye at the perfect ending.

    "Weird, weird, weird"

The narration of this book was terrible but the reader suited the character of Marerly. It seems being blind is cool which was nice as i'm blind myself so wanted to read this because of what the story was about. But no questions got answered don't know what the creatures where so that was disappointing as was the end of the book.
