Summary
Robinson Crusoe, first published in 1719, was Defoe’s first novel and survives as his best-known work. Loosely based on a true account of a Scottish sailor—Alexander Selkirk—it is a tale of one man’s fall from grace and progress to redemption. The account of Crusoe’s life, scratched out with rationed indigo ink on a dwindling supply of paper salvaged from the hull of a wrecked ship, speaks eloquently of the tenacity and ingenuity of the human spirit.

Very good, very old!
I was after a true, classic adventure survival story. Stemming from my recent love for a survival video game called Minecraft. I wanted a really detailed step-by-step adventure. Robinson Caruso gave me just this!
It is quite obvious that this story was written a very long time ago (one of the first of its kind). On a side note - the vast differences between normal life back then and now (slaves, racism, communication etc.) actually provide some wonderful incite into human nature and social development.
The story is a true epic; adventure, action, disaster and overwhelming joy. It really gives you an appreciation for what you have and how to make the best of a bad situation.
Many lesions to learn and fun to be had. Lovely story, I would certainly recommend this book to anyone! Enjoy.
The voice recording was done quite some time ago and is not flawless. Never the less, a good performance.

Excellent narration.
This was a very engaging performance by the narrator. He really helped bring the story to life, especially with the different voices towards the later part of the tale. I thoroughly recommend this spoken version.

A stunning tale of adventure
To those reviewers who said they found his edition hard going, may I remind you that it was written more than 300 years ago. For me, this makes it all the more enjoyable. Yes the language is old fashioned, but it’s easy enough to understand and really quite charming. To the reviewer who gave it just one star because it refers to slavery..... come on! Have a word with yourself. 300 years ago, slavery was common place. No one is saying it was right, but it is an undeniable part of history. I found the story wonderful, beautifully told and with many lessons that are just as relevant today as they were then. A true classic, an absolute joy.

As gripping as any adventure story I’ve ever experienced
Now I understand why this book was considered essential reading on the English Literature Curriculum whilst I was at school .. Stimulating & mind broadening.

Yes a classic but not the best written one......
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It's been interesting reading the first novel known to be written and many reviewers says it's wonderful. I found it to be badly written with much reputation and drawn out descriptions of how Crusoe built his world on the island. It lacks the depth novels today have, there is no character development so it reads dryly and is pretty uninteresting. I don't regret reading it as it is a true classic story but it's not a novel I would rush to recommend others to read.
Have you listened to any of Ron Keith’s other performances? How does this one compare?
In saying all of the above, Ron Keith's presentation of the audiobook version I read is second to none. I would have abandoned this book if not for him.
Any additional comments?
If you're working your way through the 1001 books lists as I am or are interested in the development of the novel, then absolutely read this. If you're looking for a great action or adventure story then I'm afraid this may disappoint.

Survival on a desert island
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes I would recommend it as its a classic, but also an insight to life 300 years ago
What other book might you compare Robinson Crusoe to, and why?
There are plenty of castaway tales and each has its own merits
Which character – as performed by Ron Keith – was your favourite?
Is this a trick question!!!! Why Robinson Crusoe of course.
Any additional comments?
This book has moments where it is hard going but given that it was written 300 years ago, it is still an amazing piece of writing. If this had been written today, Mr Crusoe would not have survived without 1. the app "How to survive on a desert island" 2. A stash of prozac, 3. The reality film crew. However he used his ingenuity, and strength of mind to survive which makes it an interesting read.

Amazing story.
Love this story from childhood and it still survives time. Maybe a younger reader would have been better. I don’t think the old attitude is too grating as this emphasises the times they lived in. Firstly the book is wonderful and this is an honest effort for an audio book which I listened to in a few days.
