Summary

Egaeus, le narrateur du récit, un jeune homme de milieu aisé se prépare à épouser Bérénice, sa cousine. Tous deux souffrent de maladies étranges... Bérénice dépérit, et Egaeus se met à la percevoir comme un être abstrait. Il devient obsédé par les dents de sa cousine...

Cette nouvelle d'horreur est une référence de la littérature du XIX siècle, publiée en 1835 dans le journal Southern Literary. Elle fait partie du recueil les Nouvelles histoires extraordinaires, traduite en français par Charles Baudelaire. Les lecteurs de l'époque furent horrifiés par la violence de l'histoire et s'en plaignirent à l'éditeur du journal.

Edgar Allan Poe, poète, romancier, nouvelliste, critique et dramaturge américain, a largement influencé l'ensemble du monde des arts par sa plume élégante et singulière. Figure majeure du romantisme américain, il a donné ses lettres de noblesse au genre policier tout en préfigurant celui de la science-fiction et du fantastique.
