Summary

Exclusively from Audible

Can You Forgive Her? is the first of the six in the Palliser series.

Trollope inextricably binds together the issues of parliamentary election and marriage, of politics and privacy. The values and aspirations of the governing stratum of Victorian society are ruthlessly examined, and none remains unscathed.

But above all Trollope focuses on the predicament of women. 'What should a woman do with her life?' asks Alice Vavasor of herself, and this theme is echoed by every other woman, from her friend, the uncomfortably married Lady Glencora, to her aunt, the coquettish Mrs. Greenow, as well as her clear-headed cousin, Kate.

Alice is torn between marrying her ambitious but violent cousin George or the bland but gentlemanly John Grey, ending up both accepting and rejecting each of them in turn and thus transgressing from the Victorian moral code.

In contrast, her friend Lady Glencora is forced to marry the rising politician Plantagenet Palliser to prevent the worthless Burgo Fitzgerald from wasting her vast fortune.

Trollope was considered one of the most successful and respected English writers of the Victorian era. With more than 40 published novels, they are regarded by some as among the greatest of 19th-century fiction. Many of his works covered political, social and gender issues. Fans of his work have included former British Prime Ministers Harold Macmillan and Sir John Major.

Fantastic reading by Timothy West

Really enjoyed this and the narrator is simply brilliant. - so many voices all very beautifully rendered but all done without flashiness.

Excellent naration

Although a lengthy book, was made too short by the brilliant naration by Timothy West. I have love every minute of the story, on to the next instalment. Long may they continue.

Wonderful literature

A quick review can't do any justice to the 800+ pages. What glorious writing! What an intriguing tale of mid Victorian societal wranglings; with personal struggles of love and revenge played out in a way that takes you right beside the characters. Trollope has his myriad of fans for good reason - this book being a prime exemplar.

Fabulous reading by Timothy West

Where does Can You Forgive Her? rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Very good, carried by Timothy West's fantastic performance.

What did you like best about this story?

Basically, enjoyable light entertainment set against a backdrop of money, power, class (mainly upper and middle) and gender as it played out in Victorian Britain (according to Trollope). None of this is explored in any meaningful way, this is more of a soap opera than social commentary. I enjoyed it, carried along by Timothy West's wonderful reading and listened to all 28 hours quite happily while driving and cleaning. Some sections I would have skimmed through if I had been reading rather than listening, but overall a good listen. I particularly liked the fight scene between John Gray and George Vavasor, with the involvement of a tailor who seemed to have some kind of gangland connections, Burgo Fitzgerald's louche, bad-boy behaviour and Plantagenet's obsession with the carriage springs after he finds out Cora is pregnant.

Have you listened to any of Timothy West’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Not listened to others so can't compare, but would 100% listen to other recordings by Mr West.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

At 28 hours, I don't think so, but I did listen to it everyday and felt more than a little bit addicted.

Any additional comments?

Timothy West should get a medal for what must have been a feat of endurance, and for his portrayal of Samuel 'Cheesy' Cheesacare. Very funny indeed. Thank you, Mr West!

Great Narration

Entranced by this book for several days. The narrator a little irritating at first really grew on me and by the end I adored his interpretation of each character. A great read.

Brilliant, loved it

A truly enjoyable novel made even better by a fantastic narrator, Timothy West. Trollope tells a good tale. It's up there with Jane Austen.

Wonderful

What a brilliant job Timothy West does narrating this book or perhaps narrating is the wrong word- he acts it and every character is wonderfully done. Trollope is a favourite author of mine and it’s great that so many of his books are now on Audible.
