About this listen

"Easy, very easy, is the slope of hell!"

Bound together by dreams of success, three clerks Harry Norman, Alaric Tudor, and Charley Tudor navigate the ranks of the Civil Service, each of them drawn into a web of temptation and moral dilemmas.

Harry finds himself entangled in a complex love triangle that threatens to shatter his dreams. Will charming and ambitious Alaric succumb to the seductive allure of power–or choose a path steeped in honor? And in the character of Charley, Anthony Trollope draws the picture of his own early days in London as "that most hopeless of human beings, a hobbledehoy of 19, without any idea of a career, or a profession, or a trade."

With his head in the clouds and a heart yearning for romance, Charley must navigate the harsh realities of the world while remaining true to his artistic ambition.

"Oh the City, the weary City, where men go daily to look for money, but find none."

A lovely 19th century novel with ups and downs that throws its characters on the storms of life.
At least it is worth persevering with as Trollope finds a way of ending it satisfactorily.

The twisting and turning plot that keeps one listening

So very Trollope. The ups and downs of relationships, class issues and etiquette all in minute detail. All very much of its time but some of it surprisingly contemporary. An enjoyable listen.

Trollope at his finest

Leisurely telling of the lives of three young men and three young women. This is the perfect Trollope to me, which includes episodes that could stand alone such as the descent of the mine. There are plenty of tears from nearly everyone and a lampoon of a romance

A most satisfying tale

Nigel Patterson makes this story come alive, with an excellent variety of voices and characterisation. He reads intelligently and is a joy to listen to. This adds an extra dimension to an excellent book. It appears that the character of Charlie is based on the author’s own experience of life as a young clerk and it rings true, as do all the insights into how the civil service works. Undoubtedly, though, the nub of the tale is the career of Alaric Tudor and Undy Scott, his bad angel, and this is truly gripping.
A wholly satisfying listen.

Vintage Trollope, superbly read

This novel is excellent. It soon becomes absolutely gripping. The story is very satisfying. The narrator does a good job with both male and female characters. I highly recommend this audiobook.
