About this listen

The Expeditionary Force saga continues with Breakaway, the eagerly awaited sequel to number-one Audible-ranked and New York Times best-selling Brushfire, from an epic sci-fi writer at the top of his game. Join the millions of listeners who have enjoyed R.C. Bray’s hilarious portrayal of Joe, Skippy, The Merry Band of Pirates, and so many other unforgettable characters.

The Merry Band of Pirates offered the bad guys a ceasefire. We won’t mess with them, if they don’t mess with us. Easy, right?

No.

The aliens chose to do things the hard way. So, the Pirates are racing around the galaxy to clean up the threat to Earth. The infant UN Navy has their own mission with the Alien Legion: Get humanity some allies in the fight. And the Ethics & Compliance Office might have to do something...ethical. Unless they can find a way around it.

This is as usual good fun although it was a bit long winded and too much spent on going into depth of stuff that really isn't anything to do with the story. as usual R C Bray makes the story

The Expeditionary Force series from Craig Alanson has been an incredible, entertaining and riveting journey. Sure, there have been the odd book here and there that falls a little short in my opinion, relying too much on the jibing between Joe Bishop and Skippy. That said, on the whole, this series has been superb. Breakaway is an example of why Alanson is such a great story teller and Breakaway has to be one of the best in the series, seeing a distinctive new direction in the position of Humanity in the galaxy. At no time was I Left feeling that excessive jibing between Skippy and Joe felt like padding. No, this book is a cover to cover example of why this series has to be one of the best and most accessible science fiction series out there.

Of course, the likelihood is that if you're reading this review, you're already familiar with this epic series and I need not go any further in convincing you to get this book... NOW!

However, if you've come to this review without any experience of Alanson's writing and the Expeditionary Force books, then I'd urge you to go back to the first book in this series, Columbus Day, and start your journey there. If you're not into science fiction that much, don't worry, you'll still love the characters and the writing here. I recommended this series to just such a friend, one who would not normally lean toward science fiction, and he absolutely is hooked on the series.

Also, as ever, I must say a word on the absolutely superb narration in the guise of the legend, well to me at least, that is R.C Bray. He has narrated a number of other non related books on Audible and I suspect is in more and more demand as his reading abilities and uncanny skill to interpret the mood and proper inflection when narrating become ever more popular. A good story becomes a great one when read by the right narrator. A poor narrator can make an otherwise excellent book a chore to listen to and destroy its appeal. When you already have a great series of books and combine it with the likes of Bray's narration, then you have the ultimate synergy. I've said it before and shall repeat it here; With the right narration, the audio book must surely become the definitive version of the written word.

In brief, Joe Bishop is angry and this new aspect to his personality really sees him standing up to the senior species in the galaxy. Further, the Mavericks are being deployed again, so there's that recently combined story element here too. I really found the drill sergeant humour of Surjet Jaites to give me a chuckle. Finally, as to be expected, the listener is left on a cliffhanger once more.

Alanson has done well to do some good setup work here for interesting future plot developments. Alanson is on a roll here and long may it continue.
