Who wants to be a superhero? Hope did, but she grew out of it. Which made her superhuman breakthrough in the Ashland Bombing, just before starting her freshman year at the University of Chicago, more than a little ironic. And now she has some decisions to make. Given the code-name "Astra" and invited to join the Sentinels, Chicago's premier super-team, will she take up the cape and mask and become a career superhero? Or will she get a handle on her new powers (superstrength has some serious drawbacks) and then get on with her life plan?

Summary
Welcome to 1987, part of the era of VHS and arcade games. A time when teenagers on BMXs create worlds of imagination.
The Four Horsemen - Tommy, Mikey, Kurt, and Ted - need something new to spice up their gatherings because, well, boys will be boys. When a stranger approaches Mikey with bootlegged tapes in the trunk of his car, Mikey isn’t interested, but the board game the man presents might just do the trick.
The Horsemen become Bootleggers to play this life-altering game, assuming avatars with a twist to every tale and forging into the realms created by a sadistic madman known as Mr. Nobody. Everything is at risk - family, friends, and their entire town; they must play, or everyone dies.
When folk are murdered, the boys know there is only one way to end the game. It is time to change the rules and kick some ass.

This is the 80's read you are looking for.
This is a great listen from start to finish. The narration is great the characters are spot on, and if you love the 80's then this is the one for you. The story teases you at the start then it grabs you all the way to the end. Found it hard to press the pause button as you just wanted to carry on the flow of the story and what lays around the next corner for our heroes. There is so much you could say about the story and what the heroes come across but it would spoil what is a great story. So grab your headphones and strap yourself in for a hell of a ride.

The 80's are back
Yep it's another book that harks back to the 80's but I enjoyed this as it takes a pretty fresh approach to the 80's and doesn't ram it down your throat. Not sure if it was because of rights to titles and characters but everything is slightly twisted. Snake Plissken from Escape from New York, becomes Viper for example. Our favourite cyborg is back as an occasional character, but slightly twisted - you get the picture.
The story itself is good and well paced. The vast majority is very humorous. But does go through a bit of a really dark patch in the middle. It's worth getting through this as the pace and humour is back in abundance. (I've never been one for horror, and while it didn't have my skin crawling it wasn't something that I wanted to listen to to get to sleep at night for example!)
Narration is great and very nicely done. It isn't a full radio play but there is a good variety of voices. The sound effects could be a little over whelming and drown out some of the voices when on ear buds, but listening via speakers seemed to help with this.
The book does rather hint at a 2nd in the series and I would definitely get this when it comes out. But the story is self contained enough to be very satisfying.

Exciting & Fun Throwback to the '80's
Bootleggers bring us back to the ’80s for a story full of adventure. The tone that is set in the beginning has a bit of a humorous approach that mostly carries on throughout the story. I found it difficult to stop the story and kept wanting more. Just when you think the story is going dark, there are twists and changes that keep you engaged. This story is a very clever piece of writing and one that I am hoping will continue. I highly recommend this book!
Character and story development was well done and added to the enjoyment of the story. This is one of those unique listens that keep the listener engaged!
Unfortunately, the only downside to this book was that the sound effects were a bit overwhelming. The narration was otherwise nicely done with specific voices and reactions for each character. I enjoyed the multiple performers.
There were no issues with the production or quality of this audiobook. It was clear and well done.
