Story
Edna O'Brien was born in 1930. Her brilliant debut novel, The Country Girls, was banned in her native Ireland upon its publication in 1960. Since then she has gone on to produce some of the finest writing of the 20th century. In Country Girl we hear of a life of high drama and contemplation, of encounters with Hollywood giants, pop stars, and literary titans. It is a life gorgeously, sometimes painfully remembered, in prose that sparkles with the effortless gifts of a master.

Summary
Someone is knocking at the door to Grace Adams' house, and he won't stop. Grace thinks she knows who it is, but when she goes to her second floor window for a look she sees a woman she doesn't recognize. The woman isn't alone for long before a man emerges from the dark of the surrounding woods, stabs her, and leaves her for dead. Trying to help, Grace goes to the woman and is shocked to find that it's her mother Leanne - a woman who abandoned her 11 years before. There's nothing she can do, and Leanne is already past the point where she can tell Grace what happened all those years ago or why she came back now. While Grace was only a child when Leanne left her, Detective Macy Greeley has been waiting for Leanne ever since she disappeared from Collier, MT. She's looking to close a case that has been haunting the town for far too long, but Collier is a hard-bitten place where the people are fierce when it comes to keeping their feuds between themselves and keeping secrets hidden in the past.
Karin Salvalaggio's outstanding crime fiction debut Bone Dust White is an absolutely stunning work that signals the entrance of a major new talent.

You can do better
Although it had promise in the first few chapters, it went downhill to a very predictable and boring outcome. I can usually bear a weak story if there is enough action and intrique on "whodunnit", but in this case there was very little that held my interest and I felt little connection with the central character Grace. I also did not enjoy the narrator and found her pace a bit too slow and deliberate to be enjoyable. I do see some hope in the character of Macy and I may give the second book in this series a go when it finally gets released depending on how some of the initial reviews come back. Overall, I give this book a below average rating.

Almost A Decent Read
There are several instances when this book almost reaches the level of a decent read (not great, but finish without regrets), but it never overcomes its weaknesses. The major flaws include an over abundance of characters without sufficient character development, action sequences that are ridiculous in frequency and believability, and grossly exaggerated procedural relationships between police and emergency responders. Additionally, the author fails to piece together the illegal elements of sex trafficking, drugs, and child pornography into a complete picture. Overall, this book is like a puzzle with all of the pieces forced into the wrong positions.

A town full of unpleasant people
This book did NOT meet the expectations rendered by positive feedback and an excellent book cover. I should have listened to the last review. The fairly dull story is peopled with a cast of men and women with personality disorders. Most of the relationships are codependent. The moral standards are self seeking a cross the

Slow and dull
What would have made Bone Dust White better?
None of the characters in this book were likable people, in fact all of the men were creepy and the women were indecisive and sleeping around with other people's husbands.
Has Bone Dust White turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, but probably from this author.
What three words best describe Amy McFadden’s performance?
She did a good job with the women's voices but the male voices were all similarly robotic and whispery.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
It could have been a good story.

Well narrated and easy to listen to. A classic mystery novel. I took off one star because I figured out the mystery early on. However, I enjoyed the story and seeing how the evidence led them to my conclusion.

The tense is distracting
I had trouble focussing on the story because the use of present tense was weird. It was like listening to described video on TV or reading a script.
Perhaps it is just that in the hundreds of mystery novels I have listened to this is only the second I have ever had use present tense.
The story was good and the performance was in the top 10%. Maybe someone used to stories in third-person present tense would enjoy it more.
