About this listen

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The first book in Diana Gabaldon’s acclaimed Outlander saga, the basis for the Starz original series.

One of the top ten best-loved novels in America, as seen on PBS’s The Great American Read!

Unrivaled storytelling. Unforgettable characters. Rich historical detail. These are the hallmarks of Diana Gabaldon’s work. Her New York Times bestselling Outlander novels have earned the praise of critics and captured the hearts of millions of fans. Here is the story that started it all, introducing two remarkable characters, Claire Beauchamp Randall and Jamie Fraser, in a spellbinding novel of passion and history that combines exhilarating adventure with a love story for the ages.

Scottish Highlands, 1945. Claire Randall, a former British combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding clans in the year of Our Lord . . . 1743.

Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of a world that threatens her life, and may shatter her heart. Marooned amid danger, passion, and violence, Claire learns her only chance of safety lies in Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. What begins in compulsion becomes urgent need, and Claire finds herself torn between two very different men, in two irreconcilable lives.

With over 500 audiobooks to her credit, narrator Kristin Atherton has collected multiple AudioFile Earphones Awards for books by Pat Barker, Francesca Segal, Lisa Jewell, and Alison Goodman, among others. She has been cast in the role of Jamie Fraser's sister Jenny Murray in the second half of Outlander Season 7 on STARZ.

A brand new all time favourite. I could not recommend this enough - it’s a 10/10 from me

Outstanding

Loved the historical aspect of this story and the descriptive passages. Performance was good but made Clare seem quite irritating sometimes. Good Scottish accents, a little too much passionate sex and “cupping!”

Great historical fiction

I liked the way Kristin Atherton brought the story to life by her character performances and change of tempo to heighten moments of tension.

Lively and engaging narration

I can’t listen anymore. I don’t know what I am going to do about the last book in the series as I cannot listen to Kristen Atherton. Her voice is too hard and sounds modern and Jamie’s voice is also hard and not so tender. She can’t do Scottish accents. I Don’t like the narrator compared to Davina Porter who was wonderful. They should have tried to find someone who sounded similar. Don’t like her narration of Jamie, doesn’t sound much like Jamie at all. Nor Claire, not at all feminine. Her voice is far too deep.

Wonderful story but terrible narrator

Having read all the books, more than once and seen the TV series (more than once), I wasn't really considering buying them as audible, but as Kristin Atherton is one of my favourite narrators, I couldn't resist. I felt that her characterisation of Claire and Jenny were more the characters we've come to know. Claire was a woman ahead of her time, even for the 1940s, and this narration suits her personality and dialogue more. Jenny has some of the best lines, and Kristin really is Jenny for me. But she's good with men too and made Jamie sound very sexy at the appropriate times, and captures his other moods too.

I still think that it seems very unlikely that an English woman (of any era) would say "Jesus Roosavelt Christ" though! Looking forward to hearing the rest of the series read by Kristin Atherton, although I do have a couple of the others read by Davina Porter, bought when they were on offer. I've already bought book two and pre-ordered book three.

More the Claire and Jenny we've come to know
