About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Bono—artist, activist and the lead singer of Irish rock band U2—has written a memoir: honest and irreverent, intimate and profound, Surrender is the story of the remarkable life he’s lived, the challenges he’s faced and the friends and family who have shaped and sustained him.

Narrated by the author, Surrender is an intimate, immersive listening experience, telling stories from Bono’s early days in Dublin, to joining a band and playing sold out stadiums around the world with U2, plus his more than 20 years of activism.

Throughout a remarkable life, music has always been a constant for Bono and in the audiobook, his distinctive voice is interwoven with a very personal soundtrack adding atmosphere and texture to each and every scene. From moments of classic U2 hits to snippets by The Clash, Patti Smith, Verdi, Johnny Cash and Mozart, Surrender also exclusively features clips of newly recorded reimagined versions of U2 songs including ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’, ‘With Or Without You’, ‘One’, ‘Beautiful Day’ and more, glimpsed for the first time on Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story.

As one of the music world’s most iconic artists and the cofounder of organizations ONE and (RED), Bono’s career has been written about extensively. But in Surrender, it’s Bono who picks up the pen, writing for the first time about his remarkable life and those he has shared it with. In his unique voice, Bono takes us from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was 14, to U2’s unlikely journey to become one of the world’s most influential rock bands, to his more than 20 years of activism dedicated to the fight against AIDS and extreme poverty. Writing with candor, self-reflection, and humor, Bono opens the aperture on his life—and the family, friends and faith that have sustained, challenged and shaped him.

Surrender’s subtitle, '40 Songs, One Story,' is a nod to the book’s 40 chapters, which are each named after a U2 song.

What an experience!! As I listened, I pictured how it feels to read the written word, where your mind is trying to conjure up the images & the sounds of the story. This was a movie for the ears, where the tone of Bono's brogue was soothing & natural. His excellent impersonations of the characters in his story & the music just add to it. His expressions of love for Ali are very moving without being in your face. For all his apparent posturing on the world stage, he has worked hard & genuinely, & his heart is in absolutely the right place.

How refreshing for a rock star memoir to not open with the sub headline: 'my drink and drugs hell'.. Bono has always been a rebel against rock's more traditional rebellion. No tales of throwing TVs out of hotel windows here. Instead he's always been more an ideas person. They're his drug of choice. His speed. As an idealist who puts his head above the parapet he's bound  to get shot at more than most. And for all his personal and U2's victories over the years there's falls and failures too, to which he's more than willing to explore in this candid and very humble memoir. Certainly there's the expected celebrity name checking both from the entertainment and political worlds of his music and activism but throughout it's his family, band and friends that stand out the most. Less a rock star memoir this is more a personal soul searching journey into his faith, hope and beliefs. It's very much the man behind the shades opening his heart even more.Always far more interesting than his toughest critics Bono has the right balance here of  earnestness, honesty and fun to be engaging. He's great company on this entertaining telling of his incredible life. There's some nice use of his music throughout too..

As a massive U2 fan I really enjoyed this book, I liked the way the chapters were 40 U2 songs with short clips of Bono singing the introduction of each chapter was a highlight. A heartfelt story of Bono’s family life and his other family U2. Brilliant and a must for any fan!
