Two weeks of rest and recuperation - that's what the doctor ordered. Detective Sergeant DC Smith could listen to some music, make some of his own, and maybe even catch up on his reading; he is almost looking forward to it. And then there is a knock on the door. It's only his next-door neighbor, but it is the beginning of a sequence of events that will bring him face to face with some of the darkest episodes and the most dangerous people from his own past. This is Smith's fifth investigation, but this time it's personal.

A brilliant story well researched, well written and narrated. Lovely balance of humour and deep emotions. Love this series!

Wonderful

I was unsure of the change of location and the characters, however, DC was as meticulously methodical as ever and delivered a compelling story. Once again narrated with consummate skill.

Different but still very good

A very poignant story of the 'Troubles' of NI. Told in a heartfelt, funny, sad way.
As per, both Narrator and story plot top notch.

Another cracker of a story

Fifth and the best so far in Grainger's DC Smith series, and it is unusual in that he is chasing a part of his past, only hinted at in the earlier book. Thirty years before when the 'troubles' we're at their height, he'd been serving as an officer in Ireland. Now a family he had known then wants to know what happened to one of their number and Smith returns at great personal risk to try to find out.
As well as continuing to reveal his humour and intelligence, this book is emotional and further builds Smith's character, bringing to the surface for the reader a little more of the whole man So, whilst In This Bright Future could be read as a stand alone, so much more is gained if read in series sequence.
Again, narration is by Gildart Jackson, whose excellent performance embodies the essence of Detective Sergeant DC Smith beautifully.

This is a most exceptional detective series, and sets the boundaries higher for others to follow. At the moment available for free download via Audible Plus but only for.a few more days (until.May 17th). On now to book six.
Wholeheartedly recommended

I’ve listened to all 5 of these books and loved every one. In this bright future had lots of little twists. Super story line with a brilliant narrator.
