About this listen

Although the scythe isn't pre-eminent among the weapons of war, anyone who has been on the wrong end of, say, a peasants' revolt will know that in skilled hands it is fearsome.

For Mort however, it is about to become one of the tools of his trade. From henceforth, Death is no longer going to be the end, merely the means to an end. He has received an offer he can't refuse. As Death's apprentice he'll have free board, use of the company horse and being dead isn't compulsory. It's the dream job until he discovers that it can be a killer on his love life...

Critic reviews

'Pratchett is a comic genius'
'Pratchett's humour takes logic past the point of absurdity and round again, but it is his unexpected insights into human morality that make the Discworld series stand out'
'Cracking dialogue, compelling illogic and unchained whimsy... Pratchett has a subject and a style that is very much his own'
'He is screamingly funny. He is wise. He has style'

Every now-and-again I revolt against the number of children's books we have in the car and pick something random I want to listen too. I'd read this book years ago and (my kids love fantasy and halloweeny stuff) just assumed it would be suitable. Pah! I thought. It's not labelled for Terry Pratchett Kids, but I know them. It will be fine.

Well, the story was. My two (ages 6 and 8) thought the idea of Death wanting time off, was astounding. They marveled at the description of a completely black garden, with plants, trees etc all different colours of black. They thrilled at a world where two realities could live simultaneously and fight it out for a winner. I however cringed at the "Bl**dy" swearing that I had (a) either forgotten or (b) this edited version made more obvious.

Hmm. Great audiobook. Bear in mind the swearing when playing to kids.

Surprising amount of swearing - Parents beware!

A story as good today as it was twenty years ago... and they only get better as the series goes on.

Timeless

I have read and heard so many of the discworld books, and enjoyed them all, many are pure brilliance! Though personally I feel it is a shame that Tony Robinson took a while to get into his stride with narrating various Pratchett's. I feel this is one of his better ones, though I still prefer other narrators that do Pratchett.

Not my favorite Pratchett but very good.

Love the story and beautiful brought to life by the Narrator, Tony Robinson, with the correct pronunciation fantastical words from Terry Pratchett’s mind. Highly recommend.

Amazing Narration
