Summary

"I thought: opera, how hard can it be? Songs. Pretty girls dancing. Nice scenery. Lots of people handing over cash. Got to be better than the cut-throat world of yoghurt, I thought. Now, everywhere I go, there's...."

Death, to be precise. And plenty of it. In unpleasant variations. This isn't real life. This isn't even cheese mongering. It's opera - where the music matters, and where an opera house is being terrorised by a man in evening dress with a white mask, lurking in the shadows, occasionally killing people, and, most worryingly, sending little notes, writing maniacal laughter with five exclamation marks. Opera can do that to a man. In such circumstances, life has obviously reached that desperate point where the wrong thing to do has to be the right thing to do.

Critic reviews

"Cracking dialogue, compelling illogic, and unchained whimsy....Pratchett has a subject and a style that is very much his own." ( Sunday Times)

The witches at their best!

The witches have always been my favourite characters in the Disc World universe and this is definitely one of their best, and most hilarious, adventures.

The infamous witty Prachett strikes again.

Tony Robinson brings to life the weird and wonderful world of Terry Prachett.

I loved it, couldn't wait to hear the next bit, or the next bit until before I knew it, it was done. Fabulous read.

really entertaining

This audio book is really good, Tony Robinson is the voice of the discworld..I love the tales of the ramtop witches and have been a pratchett fan for 20 years..own and have read every book..so the audio books can be a gamble as you have your own interpretation of the characters etc but Tony is brilliant and this audio book is a good adaptation.

WARNING - Abridged, NOT Planer or Briggs-boo

Where does Maskerade rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is not in my top 10 Pratchetts but it's still better than every other book, ever.

What other book might you compare Maskerade to and why?

Terry Pratchett is inimitable

How could the performance have been better?

This is an ABRIDGED version of the book, and not narrated by Nigel Planer / Stephen Briggs. Who is Tony Robinson, and why is he ruining this book?

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

NO.

Any additional comments?

Please offer the other version - I know Nigel Planer has done one.

A mystery in a mask

An easy listen, and entertaining, but the severe volume changes were distracting and very annoying.

Cut Version

I love this book - at least I love the printed version. Purchasing this Audible version, I wondered how Perdita’s audition would be handled. Unfortunately, the best parts were skipped. I feel like I’ve just watched the movie version of the book and they clipped all the fun parts short. As usual, the original book was *MUCH* better.

The performance was good; the different voices entertaining. I never thought Nanny would sound like that, but it makes sense considering the state of her teeth.

Excellent book

Excellent book. Excellent reading performance. Excellent characterizations. The only downside to this recording is that it is an abridged version on the book.

Boppie from San Diego said it best

Not much more to add. Get the Nigel Planer version. Read Boppie’s review. Yep, that’s it.

A Decent Spin on A Classic

I prefer Nigel narrate the discord series, but this narrator did a good job of creating distinct voices for the characters without any annoying screechy sounds. The story was a fun spin on Phantom of the Opera, but for me it was a bit too close to the original story and I was a bit bored for the first half of the book. I've never been bored by a Terry Pratchett book before so I gave it a chance and it definitely picked up in the second half and deviated from the Phantom on the Opera for a nice uniquely-Pratchett finish.
