About this listen

'I thought: opera, how hard can it be? Songs. Pretty girls dancing. Nice scenery. Lots of people handing over cash. Got to be better than the cut-throat world of yoghurt, I thought. Now everwhere I go there's...'

Death, to be precise. And plenty of it. In unpleasant variations. This isn't real life. This isn't even cheesemongering. It's opera. Where the music matters and where an opera house is being terrorised by a man in evening dress with a white mask, lurking in the shadows, occasionally killing people, and most worryingly, sending little notes, writing maniacal laughter with five exclamation marks. Opera can do that to a man. In such circumstances, life has obviously reached that desperate point where the wrong thing to do has to be the right thing to do...

Critic reviews

'Pratchett is as funny as Wodehouse and as witty as Waugh'
'The great Terry Pratchett, whose wit is metaphysical, who creates an energetic and lively secondary world, who has a multifarious genius for strong parody ... who deals with death with startling originality. Who writes amazing sentences' (A.S. Byatt)
'Like Jonathan Swift, Pratchett uses his other world to hold up a distorting mirror to our own, and like Swift he is a satirist of enormous talent ... incredibly funny ... compulsively readable'
'Cracking dialogue, compelling illogic and unchained whimsy...Pratchett has a subject and a style that is very much his own'
'Entertaining and gloriously funny'

As always Tony Robinson really brings the characters to life. Terry has a fantastic way with words and keeps me entertained right from start to finish

Fab abridged reading of a great story

Tony Robinson brings to life the weird and wonderful world of Terry Prachett.

I loved it, couldn't wait to hear the next bit, or the next bit until before I knew it, it was done. Fabulous read.

The infamous witty Prachett strikes again.

The witches have always been my favourite characters in the Disc World universe and this is definitely one of their best, and most hilarious, adventures.

The witches at their best!

This audio book is really good, Tony Robinson is the voice of the discworld..I love the tales of the ramtop witches and have been a pratchett fan for 20 years..own and have read every book..so the audio books can be a gamble as you have your own interpretation of the characters etc but Tony is brilliant and this audio book is a good adaptation.

really entertaining

having read the book this is a great story, unfortunately this version is out of sync. E.g. at about 45 minutes in, greebo is in human form but that hasn't happened yet! there are a few other glitches that make it very confusing. Please audible can you sort it out.
