About this listen

A scientist from another world. A mage seeking deadly knowledge. A power that could topple an empire.

Nathan's life was defined by labs and lectures until an Archmage yanked him into Davrar and made him a tantalizing offer: master magic in exchange for Earth's scientific secrets. Yet, Nathan can't shake off the feeling that darker truths lurk beneath such promises.

The world of Davrar is a dangerous place teeming with dungeons and monsters–ruled by levels, Talents, and a near-infinite progression of power. Nathan will need to rely on himself to survive, forging alliances and taking every advantage he can get against those that seek to control him.

His unique capacity to counteract magic gives him an unprecedented edge, making him a beacon of resistance against those who wield magic as a weapon of control.
Armed with intellect and an emerging power that could dismantle the very foundations of Davrar's society, Nathan emerges not as a mere student of magic, but as its ultimate adversary: the Antimage.

It's not perfect and it takes a while to find its groove, but it was quite enjoyable.

What to expect:

Sciency references as appropriate 5/5.

Mentions of math and chemistry and physics and physiology: 5/5. Not too much, but it comes up quite a few times.

Dialogue quality 3-4/5. Sometimes the sentences feel a bit stilted. It gets better. The author tried for authenticity and sometimes overshot.

Earnestness 5/5.

Character depth 4-5/5.

World building 4-5/5. It's unique and the inversion is mildly claustrophobic but don't squint too hard.

Lack of plot holes, 5ish/5. Don't squint too hard.

Science accuracy, 5ish/5.

High stakes 5/5, but besides hints throughout, you'll only get confirmation of the grand conflict in the last few sentences of this book.

Adventuring 3/5. There's quite a bit of training and social maneuvering. Very little fighting, which I approve of.

Voice acting 4/5. It's good and varied, but the tone sometimes doesn't match the context.

Main character being rational and logical 4-5/5. I have no complaints. He's not stupid and doesn't make egregious mistakes.

Plausible conflict 5ish/5. Things that go wrong are believable.

Magic: 0/5... Joking! There's plenty of magic, but not really from the main character himself. Kinda.

Thoroughly enjoyed it all the way through. The main character is smart and the side characters are great too. I honestly wasn't expecting a new favourite, but I've certainly found one. The narration was perfect and really brought the story to life; absolutely can't wait for the next installment.

A story in a similar vein but it stood out. Anti magic. Who knew. And the lack of minutes endlessly going through levels was refreshing

Anti magic interesting
