Disappointing narrator - incredible story
So I’m only partway through but so far I LOVE the story. Everything about it. If you like supernatural school type stories then you’ll love this.
But the narrator is terrible. At first she’s ok, though there’s no difference between people speaking. But it was very jarring when we meet an obviously Scottish person who is an important character. The accent is still the same as every other person (American) and dialect is constantly mispronounced. “Ye” becomes “yee” and “aye” becomes “eh” which sounds so bizarre though I am Scottish so it’s probably more bothersome to me. I don’t have the physical copy so I can’t tell if other dialects get the same treatment. I feel like a narrator should really understand how to mimic accents and dialects properly. Otherwise the narration is pretty monotone which I actually don’t mind too much but it’s less of a ‘performance’ and more just reading aloud. Tolerable, but boring.
It’s always disappointing when a narrator doesn’t pronounce words properly particularly as that is literally their job. It happens so often particularly for non-English languages and dialects. This is more important than giving characters different speech just to differentiate them in my opinion.

Great concept, alright excecution
Cool concept, and does its real world commentary well. Started out great, but spends too much time on setting things up for a big reveal ending that felt incredibly rushed, especially since the rest of the novel spends a lot of time on relatively mundane moments. The narration shines when people are talking, which is sadly also the only time it feels natural, making the slower moments feel extra slow.

This is a really good story for nine years and higher. That’s a great plot twist at the end I never saw it coming. Those looking for a story about magic they should pick this. It has lots of magic in it and great plot twist at the end. Someone she thinks is her friend betrayed her.

Men in Black meets Harry Potter
This will prove very popular, I feel. With elements of a familiar young wizard's story and world, with monsters and villains and plots, and with a diverse cast that give a wide readership a new heroine to root for, this has a lot going for it.
Amari experiences a lot of prejudice and bullying for being the 'scholarship kid' at a school where mainly privileged children go. She's already suffering the loss of her beloved elder brother, missing for several months. And now she's looking at exclusion for standing up for herself.
She realises that her brother may have been hiding a lot from her though, after mysterious objects and people turn up, and she finds herself nominated, by him, to join a new academic establishment... a magical one.
With intolerance and bullying still at play, but now with magical powers, creatures and cultures coming at her from all sides, it's a 'magic school' story with the initiation of Men in Black. And Amari wants in, if it can help her find out what happened to Quintin, who she knows isn't dead, but deeply involved in this world.
An enjoyable story to listen to, Amari is voiced well and sounds her age, the Audible copy moves quickly though most readers may prefer to read this at their own pace.
The elements you expect in this kind of story are there - mentors, friends and enemies at school, challenges and trials, powers and lessons, teachers and of course villains to be thwarted with teamwork.
I enjoyed the way the author built a world around Amari that can be followed up in future stories, the elements are in place for a whole series to continue this first episode. She's a bright, brave and inspiring young protagonist that gives readers a new sort of hero to root for.
Lots of fun, plenty of Potter-like familiarity with lots of different features that make this fresh and current.
For ages 9-14.
With thanks to Nudge Books for providing a sample Audible copy.
