Story
In the sleepy rural town of Painters Mill, Ohio, the Amish and "English" residents have lived side by side for two centuries. But 16 years ago, a series of brutal murders shattered the peaceful farming community. Kate Burkholder, a young Amish girl, survived the terror of the Slaughterhouse Killer but came away from its brutality with the realization that she no longer belonged with the Amish. Now, a wealth of experience later, Kate has been asked to return to Painters Mill as Chief of Police. She's certain she's come to terms with her past - until the first body is discovered in a snowy field.

Very Solid Take on a Well-trodden Path

Summary
In this electrifying thriller by New York Times best seller Linda Castillo, Kate Burkholder must uncover a family's long-hidden past to solve a brutal murder.
When a tornado tears through Painters Mill and unearths human remains, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder finds herself tasked with the responsibility of identifying the bones - and notifying the family. Evidence quickly emerges that the death was no accident, and Kate finds herself plunged into a 30-year-old case that takes her deep into the Amish community to which she once belonged.
Meanwhile, turmoil of an emotional and personal nature strikes at the very heart of Kate's budding relationship with state agent John Tomasetti. A reality that strains their fragile new love to the breaking point and threatens the refuge they've built for themselves - and their future.
Under siege from an unknown assailant - and her own personal demons - Kate digs deep into the case only to discover proof of an unimaginable atrocity, a plethora of family secrets and the lengths to which people will go to protect their own.

Ancient death, modern despair.
Not only is a path of destruction and heartbreak left as a tornado touches down in the small town of Painters Mill, Ohio but in the clean up a skull is found in a damaged barn.
Enter Katie Burkholder, Chief of Police. The skull leads to a complex case going back thirty years and leading to scared lives in the present day.
At the same time, Kate and John Tomassetti have their own issues to deal with.
The Kate Burkholder series, set in Amish country, is one of my favorites series and I recommend all of the books. I also enjoy Kathleen McInerney's narration.

Repetitive
I think I need a break from these books so I can begin to enjoy them again. How many times can one women end up in A&E before her bosses decide she’s reckless and a danger to herself?!

Awful and Dreary
This book does not have much of a plot (at least nothing that grabs your attention). The narrator is terrible. It is like being read to by your not very interested teacher at school. And as others have mentioned there is SO MUCH repetition. I've been trying to finish it, but I have given up. I'm just not that curious about what is going to happen to put myself through listening to the rest.

Amazing Addition To The Series
WOW! Linda does it again! I've said in previous reviews that the worst part of reading a Linda Castillo book is having to come to the end, turning that last page, closing the book. The best thing about reading a Linda Castillo book, aside from a riveting story, is that, if the author remains inspired, a year from now there will be another Kate Burkholder book. Can't wait. This series, set in the near-idyllic village of Painter's Mill, has not disappointed yet. Each story has its particular twists and turns and surprises. To even hint at what goes on here will only take away from the "fun" you're going to have with "After the Storm." If this is your introduction to Linda, I'd suggest going back to the beginning of the series., for her development of characters who then appear, book to book, grows more complex. especially this relationship between Kate and John Tomasetti. It's like slow and steady wins the race...with each book this relationship, which began tentatively, grows in complexity. This time around I was genuinely moved by the interaction between the two. This was the first time I bought a book; in the past I've acquired them from the Vine program. I don't regret the purchase at all; I've already begun sharing with other friends who have also found themselves becoming involved in this absorbing series. Kathleen McInerney was outstanding with the delivery of the story.

Disappointing! Not worth it!
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the previous Kate Burkholder books, and Kathleen McInerney provided her usual stellar performance. But why has Kate Burkholder suddenly become an irresponsible airhead who constantly puts herself and others in danger?! It’s infuriating- and having her beau Tommasetti apologise to Kate when he’s absolutely in the right doesn’t help. If you haven’t listened to this one yet, skip it.

Not enough story to carry this episode
I guess I'm not as interested as they think in the heroine's love life and angst over it. It was too much of this story and there was not really enough of the actual crime-solving. In fact she repeated herself way too many times.

Adequately entertaining
I have read this entire series and have enjoyed all the books. However, this one was not as good as previous books in the series. The plot feels redundant and I'm starting to feel like I'm just reading the same book over and over again. That being said, it's an entertaining and easy read. It kept my interest for the most part, though I'm hesitant to read the next book when it comes out.
One thing that may have affected my enjoyment was the awful narration. Particularly when the narrator tried to do a male voice. It was laughable and annoying at the same time. It kept distracting me from the story.
If you listen to the entire audio sample first and you're ok with it, you may like the narration just fine. I just happened to find it truly awful.

Not captivating ...
Maybe because the end of the mystery is known throughout the book, maybe the over use of police jargon and codes - it's nice, but not captivating.
Good performance though!

This is the worst of this series.
The first few chapters were whiney and juvenile. Throughout the entire book I wondered why the author felt it necessary to explain every single thing as though speaking to idiots. In this day and age of television and the Internet, the listener does not have to be told what CSI or CSU stands for. As for the Pennsylvania Dutch, not everything needs to be interpreted.

I love her books. There are always twists and turns and surprises, even when you think you have things figured out. I love the series!
