Summary

Like many Brits, Dick and Angel had long dreamed of living in France, but where others might settle for a modest bolthole in the French countryside, the Strawbridges fell in love with a 19th-century fairy-tale chateau, complete with 45 rooms, seven outbuildings, 12 acres of land and its own moat.

Throwing caution to the wind, Dick and Angel swapped their two-bedroom flat in East London for an abandoned and derelict castle in the heart of the Loire valley and embarked on the adventure of a lifetime with their two young children, Arthur and Dorothy.

Sharing their full journey for the first time, A Year at the Chateau follows Dick and Angel from when they first moved to France in the depths of winter and found bedrooms infested with flies, turrets inhabited by bats, the wind rattling through cracked windows and just one working toilet, which flushed into the moat, through to the monumental efforts that went into readying the chateau for their unforgettable wedding and their incredibly special first Christmas.

Along the way you'll listen to glorious descriptions of rural life in France, with charming characters, delicious food and wonderful seasonal produce, together with the extraordinary list of renovations and restorations Dick and Angel completed, many of which were not shown on TV.

As warm and entertaining as their much-loved show, A Year at the Chateau is a truly irresistible story of adventure and heart, epic ambitions and a huge amount of hard graft.

One of worst narrations ever.

Why did the Strawbridges use their own voices to narrate their story? Obviously it makes it relatable but Angela’s high pitched, amateur delivery is really hard to take. Her accent doesn’t help but the most irritating thing is that she is obviously reading it from a their script. Good stories need competent narrators and she just isn’t. Dick is better but his up and down delivery where he is trying to inject light and shade into his voice makes it jerky. They take turns reading a bit then there is a pause and Dick picks up from Angela which is a slight relief. Shame as the story is interesting. They should stick to their strengths. Telling anyone a bedtime story is definitely not one of them.

Love this couple

If you’re a fan of the hit TV show you won’t be disappointed. The couple is every bit as entertaining on audible as they are on channel 4.

You’ll love it if you love them and the TV show!

I came to ‘The Chateau’ late in the day; over lockdown in January 2021 and it has been my ‘happy place’ ever since! The Strawbridge family are an inspiration on how not to let stresses and strain get the better of you or each other. I decided to buy the book as I wanted further insight into their ‘origins’ story and it didn’t disappoint! Yes there is lots from the show, but I didn’t mind reliving that and there is still a few behind the scenes bits too. I also loved that they read it. They appear to be just themselves throughout the tv show and it’s the same on the audio book, warts and all which I love. Thank you for sharing and best of luck Mr and Mrs Strawbridge for your continuing adventures, I hope we get to share some more of them over the years.

A bit dissapointing

I love the tv program but this audiobook dragged on and on, a five minute description of a meal early on set the tone.

Excellent Book

I love the show, however the audible book was a great addition to it. Giving the wittiest inside at times.
Get it, you won't be disappointed.

Very Good!

I enjoyed listening to this book. Having watched the series I knew what to expect and the book didn't disappoint. Dick has a very soothing, melodious voice therefore, in my opinion, he is better at narration but Angel is so lovely that I enjoyed her parts just as much. I was sad when I finished it!

Love this family

A fabulous, interesting review of the first year of Angel and Dick and their family living in the Chateau. I loved watching the television programme and enjoyed listening to all the details in this book especially the wedding.

Loved every minute of this!

I listened straight through twice to make sure I hadn’t missed any details. Hurry up and write another book (tea party recipes?) please, Strawbridges!

Most enchanting

I thoroughly enjoyed the book being read by Dick and Angela. They sound like a wonderful couple, with wonderful children, and a wonderful life. It was refreshing to hear someone enjoying life even though there’s challenge

Amazing Story

I just love watching Dick and Angel on t.v. But this book is awesome and really gives the feeling of being at the Chateau. The narration is also delightful hearing them tell their own story. I hope to visit them someday :)

Such a fun listen! Great companion to the TV Show

It was joy listening to Dick and Angel tell their story. This obviously covers much more than the TV series here in the US and therefore makes it a great companion piece. Listening to them talk about each other with so much respect and love is a welcome thing. Its clear they love each other, their family and the Chateau. I hope that they will catch on in the US as I want to see and hear more!!!

Became nauseating in the end.

I struggled to finish this. I had watched the tv show and quite liked it and I LOVE France but their voices are so affected reading this book and after a while it became impossible to listen to and impossible to believe because it was all so perfect, too perfect. I would have liked more real life stuff, I don't want to listen to endless measurements of furniture or how wonderful they both think they are. OK OK I get it, you are both hard workers do you have to say it so many times? A lot of this book felt like 'filler' and when I found out he had done all this before with his previous family for a tv show about making a new life with a home in Cornwall I just couldn't finish it because the whole thing felt too contrived.

DIY & A Love Story

What an enchanting story. I fell in love with the show which as of yet has not been shown in its entirety in America. The book is so special. Literally a diary that you have shared with us. Making it even more special by the narrators who have lived the story. When it got to the wedding I was bawling like a baby! Thank you so much for sharing. Your humor is amazing!
