Summary

The chimneys of industry rise over Adua, and the world seethes with new opportunities. But old scores run deep as ever.

On the blood-soaked borders of Angland, Leo dan Brock struggles to win fame on the battlefield and defeat the marauding armies of Stour Nightfall. He hopes for help from the crown. But King Jezal's son, the feckless Prince Orso, is a man who specialises in disappointments.

Savine dan Glokta - socialite, investor and daughter of the most feared man in the Union - plans to claw her way to the top of the slag-heap of society by any means necessary. But the slums boil over with a rage that all the money in the world cannot control.

The age of the machine dawns, but the age of magic refuses to die. With the help of the mad hillwoman Isern-i-Phail, Rikke struggles to control the blessing, or the curse, of the Long Eye. Glimpsing the future is one thing, but with the guiding hand of the First of the Magi still pulling the strings, changing it will be quite another....

Abercrombie & Pacey, Purveyors of the Finest

There are some great authors here on Audible and some great narrators, no doubt about that. When you get a combination of the two, at their best like Abercrombie and Pacey in 'A Little Hatred' it takes everything up another level. This is quite simply superb!

Anyone familiar with the 'First Law' series and its universe will know much about the kind of style to expect. But this is much more than just a trotting out of the same old characters. Time has moved on and hasn't been kind. Abercrombie writes a tale that evokes the industrial revolution and enclosure. Two examples from history that showed the baser side of humanity with huge exploitation, greed and damage to our surroundings. A message for us in the current day maybe too . .

Into this fractured and angry world he gives us a sprinkling of older characters and a batch of new ones. From the highest of the high to the lowest of the low they are fabulously observed and Abercrombie writes with wit and a gorgeously cynical (some might say realistic) take on the human condition. His take on 'romantic encounters' in particular is exceedingly funny.

Of course, such a symphony of words needs a one-man orchestra to do it justice. Step forward Mr Steven Pacey, it's been far, far too long since I last had this man resounding through my headphones. He is fantastic with a brilliant range of voices that can bring to life everything from the meanest trollish peasant to the highest of royalty.

If you haven't already read the previous books from 'First Law' and 'First Law World' then you could still get a lot out of this, I have no doubt about that. However, I've also got no doubt that you would get more out of it if you started with those first as the back story is huge and much-loved characters are either referenced or make appearances. You'll have fun whichever way you do it but taking the books in order is what I would strongly recommend.

In the 'First Law' series Logan Ninefingers often reminded us that 'you have to be realistic', and normally in life that's fine advice especially when starting books that are getting such massively positive reviews. Sorry Logan, there are just some special occasions when you can forget realism and just escape it for a while. Listening to an audiobook with the names Abercrombie and Pacey on it is one of those all too rare occasions. They really are purveyors of the finest Audible audio.

Phenomenal.

Nooooo it finished too soon! So much drama, so much excitement, so many rich characters and storylines and so fast paced. I though I had more time! Excuse while I rewind and start at the beginning again. I’m eternally grateful to the friend who introduced me to Joe Abercrombie and Steven Pacey is the gold standard of narration. Proper storytelling at its finest.

What can only be a the start of a new series

New Characters are mixed with the old creating a new dynamic. as usual no one is safe and the plot never goes with the obvious.

Back to familiar grounds!

I've been waiting for what seems as an eternety for this book. I can easely say that its the read Ive most looked forward to in my whole life (I consider the first law books my favourite triology) and when Steven Pacey starts reading in my ears its like Im taken back to the days when I first encountered the First Law books. And for all the wonderful nostalgia I end up with a familiar feeling when I reach the end, as if I was re-reading part of the books that came before. It could be the overwhelming cast of old characters that are present in the story, or that the events are somewhat similar to what has come before in other Abercrombie books. But it is, as always, the characters that Joe Abercronbie dreams up (that sometimes give me nightmares) that help carry the somewhat thin plot forward, and I never felt bored. Its with huge expectations that I await the rest of this planned triology to see how it all evolves!

+Great characters
+Steven Paceys performance
+Great setting

-Wished the story would've evolved more
-Thought it to be a bit short
-Felt a bit too familiar at times.

The best fantasy writer at the moment.

I love all his books but this one is even better. As are many I'm also deeply disappointed by the pace GRRM writes his books. Joe Abercrombie his works should've been translated into an HBO series as well...

Abercrombie - how I’ve longed...

... for his extended imagination, his remarkable language (and no, English is not native to me), his deeply enjoyable characters - come to life through mr Pacey’s superior acting. Better than any movie, although IF it would be, GoT would look like child’s play.

This was really good

As expected of Joe Abercrombie. Even after reading nine books of his he was still able to surprise me. Now I can't wait to see how he will torture all the old and new characters in the following books.

Also, Steven Pacey manages to make a great book even better.

Awesome, but way too short

This is the first of Abercrombie's books that I felt ended way too abruptly and unexpected. The book was awesome, but now I'm left with a unsatisfying ending and have to wait for book 2... As always, the narrator is AMAZING, and the characters all very likeable and unique.
